Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her provision. He looked at relevant documentation, such as self-evaluation and evidence of the suitability of staff. The inspector spoke to a small selection of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder has a strong drive to improve. She makes increasingly good use of training and works with other professionals to raise the quality of her provision. This has, for example, helped her improve the assessments she makes of children's progress and her support for children who have special educational needs. Parents appreciate the consideration and concern for their children's happiness that the childminder shows. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities to protect children from abuse and neglect. She has secure procedures to supervise her assistants and to check they are suitable people to care for children. Robust policies and procedures underpin the childminder's good practice to promote children's well-being and safety.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder helps babies and children settle quickly into positive routines that help them feel secure and confident. For example, they know where to find toys they want to play with and how to tidy them away. The childminder makes strong use of children's interests to motivate them to learn. For example, children develop their interest in the natural world by helping to care for the childminder's chickens and other pets. The childminder helps children develop their speaking and listening skills. She asks well- considered questions and speaks clearly and purposefully to them. She provides many opportunities for children to develop their physical skills, such as learning to grasp writing and drawing implements carefully.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children develop positive relationships with the childminder. She sets a very clear example for children to follow. There is a calm, friendly and busy atmosphere. Children grow in confidence and security. The childminder helps children to be tolerant towards those who hold different ideas and beliefs to their own. For example, they celebrate a range of cultural festivals and anniversaries to help develop their understanding. The childminder promotes children's knowledge and understanding of healthy lifestyles and good hygiene procedures. She helps them to make healthy choices, try new food and to be physically active. Children are courteous and learn to be patient and take turns. They behave well and are helped to consider the consequences of their actions toward others.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their individual starting points. They develop skills and attitudes that prepare them for their later learning and for beginning school. Children listen carefully and speak about things that interest them. They concentrate and follow instructions. They learn to solve jigsaws and other puzzles. Babies and young children learn to walk, climb and balance with confidence. Children develop their counting skills well and learn to place objects, such as seashells, in order of shape, colour and size.
