Children benefit from their understanding and a consistent approach to their care and learning needs. The childminder supports children learning English as an additional language particularly well with the help of others involved in their learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently plan opportunities for children who prefer to learn outdoors, to explore and investigate to extend their all-round development.  The childminder does not provide regular experiences to explore and investigate a range of materials to extend their creativity.

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder implements robust safeguarding procedures and understands how to protect children's welfare. The childminder effectively promotes children's safety. The childminder uses training effectively to improve outcomes for children. For example, the childminder has introduced den building to encourage children's communication skills during role play games. The childminder reflects on her practice and makes changes that are positive for children. For example, the childminder has found out more about observation and assessment to plan interesting activities that engage and motivate children to learn. The childminder monitors children's learning accurately. She identifies their next steps and plans to help them develop well.

p.3

The childminder provides good-quality interactions with the children that help them make progress. For example, while children play with food in the kitchen, the childminder joins in to help them name different objects to improve their vocabulary. The childminder plans educational programmes based on children's interests. For example, she plans activities to extend children's mathematical skills based on their interest in cooking. She helps children to think about size and the amount they need to cook, when they make crispy cakes, for example.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder encourages children to be polite and independent. For example, she reminds them to sit nicely at the table, try new fruits and butter their own bread. The childminder helps children to have a positive attitude to a healthy lifestyle. For example, she teaches children to wash their hands after using the bathroom and to develop their physical skills, when they climb, balance and kick balls outdoors. The childminder helps children to play with their friends and share resources.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are happy, positive and settled in their play. For example, they became mesmerised by a toy garage and concentrated for a long time rolling cars down a slide so they emerged at the bottom through a tunnel. Children develop good social skills and behave well. Children enjoy looking at books and develop good early reading skills. They learn a good range of skills that will help them as they move on to school.
