 The childminder has good teaching skills. For example, she extends children's understanding when she repeats and reinforces new words with young children.  The childminder's effective assessment of children's progress helps her to plan challenging activities to meet their needs. Children make good progress.  The childminder forms strong partnerships with parents to support continuity in children's care and learning.  Children form strong emotional bonds with the childminder. They are confident, happy and secure.  The childminder creates a welcoming and interesting environment for children. She makes sure that the space is organised well to enable children to move around safely and independently.  The childminder is very reflective and makes positive improvements that benefit children's needs and interests. For example, she has recently increased opportunities for children to explore different materials and to build on their physical skills.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not fully developed opportunities for children to use their home languages in their play, to build on their good communication and language skills.  The childminder does not make the most of opportunities for children to increase their understanding of the natural world around them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibility if she has a child protection concern. She keeps herself up to date with local safeguarding procedures. The childminder implements thorough safety precautions that help to keep children safe both indoors and on outings. The childminder consistently and effectively monitors her planning and practices, taking into account the views of parents. She develops her knowledge and skills well, to improve her practice and children's outcomes. The childminder keeps parents well informed about children's progress and welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides a wide variety of interesting and stimulating activities. For example, children particularly enjoy exploring play foam in a tray. They have fun as they move and handle the foam; showing good coordination. Children develop good communication skills overall. Young children look in a special book of photographs of their families and say the names with help from the childminder. The childminder makes good use of resources to extend children's learning. For example, children develop a strong awareness of shape when using a shape posting box. They find out how things work; for instance, as they explore simple technology, such as toy cash tills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children settle well in the homely environment. The childminder is kind and caring, and a good role model. She gives a good level of attention to children and supervises them well. The childminder teaches children to respect others, listen to their friends and share resources. Children respond positively to the childminder and behave well. The childminder teaches young children about healthy lifestyles through effective everyday practices. Children enjoy plenty of exercise in the garden and in local parks. The childminder helps children to develop a strong awareness of how to stay safe and manage risks.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop well in the skills they need to secure future learning. They enjoy learning and are well motivated. They eagerly join in with activities and are willing to have a go and learn new skills. Children concentrate well and become absorbed in activities. Young children become increasingly independent; for example, as they help to prepare snacks. They make decisions and choices about what they want to do. Children readily approach adults when they need help.
