Previous inspection: Requires Improvement

p.1

3

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder has not made sure that her knowledge of safeguarding requirements is as up to date as possible and that she has a good understanding of current government advice and guidance regarding child protection.  The childminder does not complete the progress check for children between the ages of two and three years.  The childminder does not involve parents as fully as possible in the assessment of the starting points for children's learning.  The childminder does not make the most of available professional development opportunities to develop her knowledge, understanding and practice.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder has good relationships with parents. Parents are complimentary about the care their children receive.  Children really enjoy initiating their own play and following their interests, using the good range of resources available, both inside and outside in the garden.  Children know what is expected of them and behave well. The childminder is a good role model and children learn to share, take turns and treat others with respect.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 improve understanding of the current safeguarding requirements as set out in the statutory framework for the early years foundation stage, including any advice and guidance issued by government 15/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

 develop knowledge of the progress check for children aged between two and three years, and ensure that a review of children's progress is made and a written summary of children's development in the prime areas of their learning is provided for parents. 29/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 involve parents more fully in sharing information about what children already know and can do when they first join the setting, in order to inform the assessment of children's starting points  undertake professional development that raises the quality of the provision and increases the potential to achieve excellent outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector took account of the written views of parents.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection. She looked at relevant documentation, such as self-evaluation, policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder knows how to identify and report concerns about a child. However, she has not updated her knowledge and practice in relation to new legislation, or considered further professional training opportunities to extend and develop her existing knowledge and skills. The childminder has taken some steps to improve her provision since the last inspection. She has introduced new systems to help her observe children and check on their progress. The childminder reflects on her practice to help her identify aspects that she can develop to support children's learning. Self-evaluation includes the views of parents and children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder identifies the next steps in children's learning and plans some purposeful learning experiences. However, the childminder does not work with parents to help her establish highly accurate starting points for children's learning. As a result, her planning is not precise enough to secure consistently good progress in children's learning. Nevertheless, the childminder responds appropriately to children's immediate interests as they play. Children enjoy using a range of materials to make pictures and to practise their writing skills. They are developing communication and early literacy skills that are needed for their future learning. Children enjoy playing games, such as hopscotch and confidently identify the numbers on the board. The childminder has established relationships with the local school and pre-school to help secure some continuity for children's care and learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not have any knowledge of the requirement to complete a progress check between the age of two and three years. This means she does not have a good overview of children's progress in the prime areas of learning to help her spot where children may need additional support. She does not provide parents with a written summary of their children's progress, so they have relevant information to share with other professionals, such as the health visitor. However, the premises are secure and children are well supervised. Healthy lifestyles are promoted well. The childminder provides a range of nutritious snacks. Children enjoy a range of activities and exercise that enhances their physical development. They are taken on regular outings to local parks, farms and nature reserves. The childminder teaches children about a range of cultures and festivals through creative activities. Children develop good social and emotional skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

They form relationships and play well with others when they attend local playgroups with the childminder.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Due to weaknesses in the assessment arrangements, some aspects of teaching are not as strong as others. However, children are making generally typical progress in their learning and development. They learn to be polite and helpful. Children show that they feel safe, secure and eager to interact with others, playing with resources and taking part in activities. They are appropriately prepared for their eventual move on to school.
