children and young people since the most recent full inspection

This home was judged good at the full inspection. At this interim inspection, Ofsted judges that it has improved effectiveness .

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The home has experienced a stable period since the last inspection, with no admissions or discharges of young people and a relatively stable staff team. The young person is settled at the home and has developed strong and trusting relationships with staff. This is reflected in the low number of incidents occurring and the young person’s incremental progression in most areas.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The home is not fully staffed currently and staff have worked hard to cover all shifts themselves due to the young person not being comfortable with unfamiliar staff. Recruitment has taken place and the home will be fully staffed in August 2016.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Attendance at education is a significant issue for the young person placed. Since commencing his placement in October 2015, there has been a trend towards an increase in engagement in home education supported by the company’s school, although the young person has not yet achieved attendance at the school itself. While this continues to be an area for improvement, the staff team show dedication, commitment and flexibility in their attempts to improve his engagement. Due to being in a solo placement and not attending education with others, the young person is somewhat socially isolated. Staff understand this and are working with him to increase his range of social contact and his confidence in this area.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Staff are mindful of the young person’s career aspirations and have creatively designed a snakes and ladders board upon which he can chart his progression and achievements towards his goals.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The young person has had increasing family contact from his starting point, which is of huge significance for him. Although not without issues, the family contact provides him with a sense of purpose and influences his engagement and contribution to the placement. He feels well supported by staff in respect of maintaining this contact and frequently seeks staff support while on contact. This means he is aware he can rely on staff to keep him safe. The young person is generally healthy and is supported to attend routine health appointments. There are some concerns about his sleep pattern and staff monitor this and try many strategies to enable him to have a regular sleep pattern. Progress in this area is slow and staff are alert to this and continue to try different strategies. The young person enjoys a healthy and varied diet and frequently expresses his food choices to staff. Staff work hard to help the young person

understand his own emotions and as a result he is better able to acknowledge and address his feelings; this has resulted in fewer incidents of damage to the home. Where damage has occurred, the young person has accepted responsibility and helped to repair damaged furniture.

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Good attention is paid to ensuring that the young person’s wishes and feelings are recorded and taken into account. The quality of key working is high and the young person has a well-developed relationship with the key worker, which allows for varied and sometimes difficult topics to be covered in key worker sessions. The quality of recording in the home is good, with detailed plans in place which are updated on a monthly basis. There is a daily journal; this gives an accurate picture of the young person’s daily life and is recorded in great detail.

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

There are few safeguarding issues arising within the home due to the settled presentation of the young person currently in placement. Any issues that do arise are dealt with appropriately by the staff. Staff report that they are familiar with all safeguarding procedures and they practise responding to ‘made-up’ incidents during supervision to ensure that they would know what to do should a situation arise. The young person reports feeling safe in the home.

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The home has developed a strong working relationship with the young person’s family and social worker which allows for consistency of care and transparency in communication. Several compliments have been received from the social worker in respect of the progress made by the young person.

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The quality of both internal and external monitoring is good. There are systems in place to monitor the quality of care and these are robust and routinely carried out by the manager. The manager understands the home’s strengths and weaknesses and supports the development and improvement of the service.

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

There were no requirements or recommendations at the previous inspection, and none are made at this inspection.

At the interim inspection we make a judgement on whether the home has improved in effectiveness, sustained effectiveness or declined in effectiveness since the previous full inspection. This is in line with the ‘Inspection of children’s homes: framework for inspection’.

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children’s home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference that adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
