This provision is good

 Since her last inspection, the childminder has worked hard to improve the quality of her provision with the help of local authority support. The childminder has increased her understanding of the safeguarding requirements and of the observation, assessment and planning process.  The childminder supports children in their play and learning well. She provides them with stimulating play activities which challenge them and help them to make good progress.  Children build a strong bond with the childminder, who supports their emotional well- being effectively. Children behave well and feel happy, secure and confident in the childminder's comfortable home.  The childminder builds secure and communicative relationships with parents, who are very pleased with the care and education she offers to their children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always find ways to enhance experiences for those children who prefer to learn outdoors.  The childminder does not seize all opportunities to encourage older children's early literacy skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make better use of ongoing assessment to make improvements to the children's educational experiences, particularly for those children who prefer to learn outdoors  develop teaching further, making full use of opportunities to encourage older children's early literacy skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's play activities and the childminder's interactions with them.  The inspector undertook a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder about the children and looked at their learning records.  The inspector sampled some safeguarding and leadership documentation.  The inspector gained written feedback from parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is fully aware of her duty to protect children in her care by following correct procedures. She keeps her required training up to date, such as first aid, to help her deal with an emergency. The childminder has a good understanding of the legal requirements and shows a strong commitment to improving the service she offers. She completes online training, has a childminder mentor and has developed her knowledge of the observation, assessment and planning process. The childminder forges strong relationships with staff at the pre-schools children attend so she can discuss continuity of care and moderate children's learning records.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has good teaching skills. She provides an attractive environment for children, with play resources and activities to challenge and motivate them. She interacts effectively with children, supporting their development and building on what they know and can do. For example, when children showed an interest in naming and putting two- dimensional shapes together, she asked them what the shapes look like, which develops children's thinking skills and creativity. The childminder is careful to support children's communication and mathematical skills. She gives children time to talk, skilfully demonstrates being creative with play dough, and encourages them to count and add one more to a given number.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are well looked after. They enjoy attentive care, supervision and clear guidance from the childminder about how to keep safe. For example, children spontaneously talk about keeping safe and know the fire drill routine. Children learn about healthy lifestyles. They take part in regular outdoor play activities and can rest in a cosy, attractive area. Children follow good hygiene practices, such as washing their hands before eating. They show their good social communication skills and are confident learners, developing effective life skills. Children develop a keen sense of belonging. For example, the childminder displays the children's art work in her home.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children learn successfully from their play activities. They make good progress and achieve well. For example, they excitedly learn that two colours mixed together can make a third colour, and enjoy painting and talking about their pictures. Children talk confidently about their home life and are beginning to link letters to sounds and words through enjoyable technology toys. They undertake their own care needs and learn about people who are different to them. They relish all the opportunities on offer; they reflect on favourite stories and spontaneously sing favourite songs.
