This provision is good

 The quality of the childminder's interactions with children is good. Children behave in a positive and engaging way, and are interested and involved as they play. The childminder extends children's ideas and helps them learn and develop.  Since the last inspection, the childminder has successfully improved her ability to use observation and assessment to help children make progress. She uses tracking well to identify gaps in children's development and puts steps in place to help them catch up where needed. This is particularly effective for children who have special educational needs or disability.  The childminder uses her qualifications and experience well. She works closely with parents and other professionals and provides a joined-up approach to children's care and learning needs. All children make good progress.  The childminder has identified training that has helped her to evaluate her setting and

make targeted improvements. For example, in response to training the childminder has introduced a range of different sized tubes and guttering to help children learn about speed and direction.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently offer children the best possible support to develop an interest in, and practise, early writing.  The childminder sometimes directs children during craft activities rather than allowing them to explore their own creative ideas.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 make better use of opportunities that arise to encourage children to develop their early writing skills  improve opportunities for children to use creative materials and express their independent ideas.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children indoors and outdoors.  The inspector looked at documentation, including children's learning journals.  The inspector conducted a leadership and management meeting and a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector spoke with children and took the written views of parents into account.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder works well with her co-childminder and understands her responsibility to support children's learning and welfare. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding procedures and child protection issues to support children's welfare. The childminder has successfully improved her practices since her last inspection and has learnt to evaluate her setting and target future improvements. Children develop a range of skills to help them as they move on to school. For example, children negotiate space and learn to share as they race on wheeled toys in the garden. The childminder's relationship with parents and other professionals is strong and effective, helping to support children's learning in the setting and at home.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children are interested, motivated and keen to take part. For example, the youngest children are excited as they find a variety of interesting natural objects in a treasure basket. The childminder has worked hard to develop a really interesting and well- organised learning environment. For example, children have fun as they look at mobiles and make funny facial expressions in mirrors. Children make discoveries as they play, such as when they take on a story character, and enjoy dressing up. The childminder is skilled at encouraging children to improve their imaginations and early reading skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children's behaviour is consistently good. The childminder helps children to think about the feelings of others. Children are respectful and tolerant. They thoroughly enjoy playing outside and go on lots of local visits. For example, children bring natural materials back from the woods and the beach and use them in their play. Children experience lots of fresh air, exercise and sunshine. Children have built positive emotional relationships with the childminder, and are happy and settled.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children thrive in a very well-considered learning environment. They make lots of independent choices about where they would like to play. Children solve problems and find solutions. They are well prepared for their move to school.
