p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder failed to notify Ofsted, within 14 days, of a change to the adults living on the childminding premises so that Ofsted can determine the suitability of the new household member. The required progress checks when children are aged between two and three years have not been carried out and other assessments are inconsistent. The childminder is not well informed enough to precisely plan the next steps that help to extend children's learning. The childminder does not evaluate his practice effectively enough to help him identify where changes can be made to improve the outcomes for children. Opportunities for professional development that help to raise the quality of teaching are not taken up.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Children have affectionate relationships with the childminder. He plays with them and shows them he enjoys and values their company, which supports their self-esteem. The childminder provides children with a good range of books. He encourages them to share stories and helps them to develop their listening skills. Children benefit from a broad range of toys, books and games which is well organised, enabling children to help themselves and play independently.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:
p.2

p.2

p.2

strengthen assessment procedures to ensure there is a secure understanding of each child's stage of development; use this information to plan appropriate activities that help children to make the best progress possible. 19/08/2016
p.2
Due Date
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
Due Date
improve the evaluation of the provision and include an ongoing programme of professional development, in order to raise the quality of teaching and the outcomes for children.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the children's activities indoors and outside and talked with the childminder and the children. A range of documentation was looked at, including children's records, some policies and procedures and evidence of the suitability of those working with children and living in the home. The inspector looked at areas of the home used by the children and the resources available to them. The inspector held discussions with a small number of parents and took account of their written comments.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder has not notified Ofsted in a timely way of a new person living on the childminding premises. This means that the required checks have not been undertaken to determine this person's suitability. However, the childminder ensures this person has no unsupervised contact with minded children. This means that the risk to children is minimised. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a suitable understanding of how to protect children from abuse or neglect. He has written procedures to follow if he has concerns about a child in his care. The childminder has improved some aspects of the provision since the last inspection. For example, there are improved resources to support children who speak English as an additional language. However, the quality of teaching and children's assessments remain inconsistent and he has not used self-evaluation effectively to identify professional development opportunities,
p.3
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
in order to increase the outcomes for children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder encourages the children to choose activities and lead their own play. He responds to their immediate interests and promotes some aspects of their learning. For example, the childminder talks to children about size, colour and shape when they are building with large blocks. However, he does not provide a short written summary of children's development for parents when children are aged between two and three years. The childminder's teaching skills are not strong enough to help him to challenge children and extend their learning. In addition, he does not make regular assessments to help him plan for children's next steps. The childminder has a positive relationship with parents. They speak well of the care he provides and feel that their children look forward to their time in his home.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The childminder has not ensured that all adults in the home have had their suitability established. Children's welfare is not fully assured. Other aspects of children's welfare are promoted appropriately. The childminder supervises the children as they play to keep them safe. He promotes polite, kind behaviour and helps the children to share and take their turn. Children benefit from exercise in the childminder's garden and go for daily walks, which supports their physical development. They learn how to take care of animals as, for example, they help the childminder to feed the chickens. The childminder works with parents to ensure that children eat healthy, wholesome foods.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Children generally meet their expected milestones but are not supported to make the best progress possible. Children gain the basic skills they need for the next stage of their learning, including school. They learn suitable hygiene practice, such as washing their hands before meals and after collecting the chickens' eggs. Older children manage their personal care competently. Children develop their social skills as they interact with each other and learn to share their games. They show an interest in drawing and writing.
