p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 Not every child's accident is recorded appropriately and shared with parents.  The quality of staff's teaching and interactions with children are variable. Staff miss opportunities to engage in purposeful play. As a result, not all children develop their enthusiasm to build on existing skills.  Staff do not plan activities consistently throughout the year that best support the potential progress children can make.  The organisation of the care of children attending the holiday club is not effective. This has an impact on the quality of care and learning children receive, particularly for pre- school children.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children arrive positively ready to play and socialise with their friends. This helps them to develop levels of confidence.  Since the last inspection, staff have increased children's opportunities to learn about making healthy food choices. This is supported by adequate discussions from some staff.  Partnerships with parents and supporting agencies are in place. This helps children who require additional support to gain the required interventions needed.  The manager is passionate about addressing weaknesses identified in staff's practice and has begun to make some changes.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

Inspection activities

 This inspection was carried out as a result of a risk assessment, following information received about this provider.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching in all age groups, during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed two joint observations, one with the manager and the other with the manager and the early years advisor.  The inspector held a meeting with the manager and deputy manager. She looked at relevant documentation with regards to children's safety and welfare, including accident and medication records. They discussed issues in relation to management of children's behaviour and the arrangements for monitoring staff performance.  The inspector discussed the manager's procedure for self-evaluation and evidence of the suitability and qualifications of staff working in the nursery.  The inspector spoke to staff, parents and children during the inspection and took

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The inspection was prioritised following concerns raised to Ofsted. The aspects of the learning and development requirements were not met. Furthermore, during the inspection some aspects of the welfare requirements were not met. Staff do not record every accident that children have and share these with parents. This does not ensure parents are aware of incidents, enabling them to monitor their children after they leave the nursery. Senior management have not considered the impact of providing care to older children during the school holidays. Younger children have reduced opportunities to play and learn effectively, as they have to share the space with older children. This limits their engagement and hinders the potential progress they make. Some of the older boys are boisterous and at times forget about the younger children, which results in unnecessary accidents. Staff do remind the older children to be mindful of the younger children in order

to minimise the impact. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff have had the necessary checks completed and receive safeguarding training. They are confident about the procedures to follow if they have concerns about a child in their care. Adult-to- child ratios are maintained, which further supports children's safety. The manager completes a process of self-evaluation and includes views from staff, parents and children. Staff receive supervision sessions and have access to further training.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Staff are well qualified. However, they do not always use the skills developed through training to plan and deliver good quality play and learning experiences for all children, all year round. During term time sessions, staff plan a range of activities that helps children make age-appropriate progress. However, out of this time they do not plan as effectively. This results in children not receiving consistently, good quality learning. This impacts on potential learning. Furthermore, staff's teaching methods and interactions are variable. Occasionally, staff take on a supervisory role and miss opportunities to engage children in sustained play and learning. This means children of all ages are not fully supported to be enthusiastic learners or learn new skills in preparation for their next stage in learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children's behaviour is generally good. Occasionally, when children try and test the boundaries, staff manage this consistently. Children who have difficulties managing their behaviour and feelings are supported through effective strategies. For example, they can select something from the 'golden bucket' and are given encouragement and praise. All children have a key person who they build attachments with. Effective procedures are in place for the administration of medication. Staff risk assess the environment indoors and outdoors. Children enjoy playing outside in the fresh air developing their physical skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Weaknesses highlighted do not best support outcomes for children. However, some learning does take place. As a result, children are reaching age expected levels of development. Gaps in learning are identified and support is put in place.
