Previous inspection: Requires Improvement

p.1

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not always manage the behaviour of older children effectively enough to ensure that they have a clear understanding of her expectations. This means that younger children's focus and concentration during activities are not always fully supported.  The childminder's professional development programmes are not yet targeted enough to improve the overall quality of teaching.  Younger children cannot always make independent choices about what they would like to play with, as resources are not easily accessible to them.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder knows children's interests well. She conducts suitable observations and assessments of their development. The childminder ensures children have opportunities to progress in all areas of learning.  Children have secure relationships with the childminder and her assistant. They enjoy their time spent at the setting.  The childminder knows the children well. She has a secure understanding of children's home lives and makes effective use of opportunities to celebrate diversity.  The childminder has a clear understanding of the importance of working in partnership with parents and other professionals.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

Due Date

 provide consistent messages to older children about their behaviour so that younger children's learning is not disrupted and their focus and concentration is fully supported. 20/09/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 use self-evaluation to identify training needs and engage in professional development to improve the overall quality of teaching  improve the opportunities for children to make independent choices.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the areas of the premises used for childminding purposes.  The inspector spoke with the childminder, her assistant and the children at appropriate times during the inspection. She looked at relevant documentation, such as the children's learning records and evidence of the childminder's suitability and qualifications.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector reviewed written feedback provided by parents to take their views into account.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder supervises her assistant appropriately. However, self-evaluation does not effectively reflect on professional development to enhance the quality of their practice. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder demonstrates a secure understanding of how to identify concerns relating to children's welfare and report these to the appropriate agencies. She has an appropriate understanding of wider child protection issues and her responsibilities with regard to these. The childminder successfully uses thorough risk assessment now to ensure that the premises is safe, clean and secure. She regularly reviews and updates her risk assessment procedures. The childminder has appropriate systems for working in partnership with parents and other professionals. She shares information with parents on a daily basis about their children's development and achievements and displays relevant notices for them to access such as

the contact details for Ofsted. Parents provide positive feedback about the quality of care provided by the childminder.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder and her assistant play and interact appropriately with the children. However, young children's concentration and focus are not promoted as effectively as they could be. This is because, at times, older children can become boisterous and the childminder does not manage this effectively enough. However, children enjoy their interactions with the childminder. They develop physical coordination and rhythm as they explore the sounds they can make with different musical instruments. Young children eagerly pull themselves up on the furniture and take some steps, with support from the childminder. She uses appropriate observation and assessment systems to track and monitor the development of each child. The childminder is experienced and has appropriate expectations for what each child can achieve. She uses praise well to encourage children to explore.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not make best use of options to promote children's independence. For example, although the childminder has ample resources to promote children's development, these are not always accessible. Children learn how to keep themselves safe. The childminder uses clear messages to help children understand how to navigate space and use equipment safely. The childminder makes good use of opportunities for children to help to learn about the world around them. She takes them out in the local community frequently to explore the environment. The childminder role models and encourages children to use their manners, look after resources and take turns. Children now sit together at mealtimes and have positive social experiences during this time, talking happily with the childminder and her assistant.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children make steady progress in their learning. They develop the basic skills required to prepare them for their next stage of learning. However, their concentration and focus is not as well supported as it could be.
