This provision is good

 The childminder works closely alongside her assistant and co-childminders to develop strategies that provide high levels of care for each child.  The childminder maintains a stimulating and engaging environment both indoors and outdoors that parents describe as home from home for their children.  Children's emotional well-being is very well supported. Children settle quickly into the setting, demonstrating they feel safe and secure. They communicate freely with each other and the childminder.  The childminder continuously makes accurate assessments of each child's development and uses these to plan challenging activities. As a result, all children are achieving well.  Children demonstrate high levels of self-esteem and take a lot of pride in their achievements, which are further enhanced by the praise and nurturing care of the childminder.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder's professional development is not yet sharply focused on effectively reflecting on recent changes to practice and guidance to improve provision further.  The childminder has not yet fully identified where further improvements to the quality of teaching can be made.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen professional development to more effectively reflect on current practice and guidance to improve practice further  strengthen the monitoring of practice to place a stronger emphasis on raising the quality of teaching to an outstanding quality.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector observed a planned activity and jointly evaluated this with the childminder.  The inspector held a meeting with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation, such as how the childminder evaluates and evidence of the suitability of assistants working with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to a small number of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation including safeguarding procedures and policies, as well as observation and assessment documentation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has successful strategies in place for working with other professionals to ensure a two-way flow of information is maintained. Safeguarding is effective. Children's safety is promoted well and from a young age children learn how look after themselves, adopting a healthy lifestyle. The childminder supports her assistant's professional development and ensures they keep up to date with relevant training and policies. The childminder shows a commitment to improving her practice further. However, self- evaluation does not place a strong emphasis on raising the quality of teaching to the highest level. Children learn about the wider community. The childminder promotes equality at all times and children feel valued.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a very good knowledge of her key children and works closely with parents to establish children's current interests and learning styles. She accurately tracks children's development and uses different opportunities to extend their learning. For example, she uses small-world resources to help children to explore different mathematical concepts. The childminder sets high expectations for what each child can achieve and she encourages children to explore their own ideas. Children demonstrate a love of reading, and enjoy sitting sharing stories together. Parents are very pleased with the progress their children are making during their time with the childminder.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children engage well and show high levels of concentration, wanting to finish a task even when they find it difficult. For example, when completing a shape sorter, the childminder encourages the child to carefully look at each shape and find the corresponding hole. Children's independence is very well supported. Children are actively encouraged to have a go at tasks themselves, and the childminder offers a lot of praise and encouragement to boost children's self-esteem. Children demonstrate good social skills; from a young age they learn to share. For example, a younger child goes and gives everyone a torch so they can all explore the lights together.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are all making good progress from their starting points. The childminder is quick to identify any gaps in children's learning. Children are well prepared for their move on to school and demonstrate a love of learning by their enthusiasm to participate. Children demonstrate good critical-thinking skills, and link their previous experiences to discover new ideas.
