Outcomes for children Requires improvement
p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder does not make effective use of the information she gains from her observations to help her plan challenging activities for each child that take account of children's interests and learning style to help extend and promote their learning and development. The childminder's teaching and interaction skills are variable. Activities lack challenge and are overly directed. This does not sufficiently encourage children to develop the skills to become inquisitive and curious in their learning. The childminder does not regularly seek ongoing professional development opportunities to broaden her skills and further enhance outcomes for children. The childminder has not evaluated her practice thoroughly enough to identify where improvements need to be made to raise the standards.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder has established friendly and positive relationships with parents. She shares policies and procedures with them and follows their wishes about their children's care needs. Children are happy and content. The childminder treats them with warmth, consideration and kindness, promoting their self-confidence and sense of security. The childminder sets clear and consistent boundaries for the children, and she is a positive role model. Consequently, children quickly learn what behaviour is acceptable, and they treat people and property with care and respect.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

Due Date
develop an effective programme of professional development to support the continuous improvement of knowledge, understanding and practice make better use of evaluation to identify where improvements need to be made that raise the quality of the provision.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities and evaluated these jointly with the childminder. The inspector looked at children's records, observation and assessment files and a selection of policies. The inspector spoke to the childminder and children throughout the inspection. The inspector took account of parents' views from the written documentation they had provided for the inspection. The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualification and the suitability of all adults living in the home.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder knows how to recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse. She knows how to make a referral if she is concerned about a child's welfare. In addition, she keeps the setting safe and ensures that children are supervised at all times. The childminder does not fully reflect on and evaluate her practice to help drive improvement forward. She has not met recommendations from the last inspection and so some areas of practice remain weak. The childminder has completed mandatory training, such as first aid. However, she has not accessed other opportunities, in order to continuously develop herself professionally. This means she is not developing her knowledge and practice to create the best outcomes for children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder carries out some observations of children. However, these are not used well enough to help her understand children's level of achievement, interests and learning styles, in order to shape future learning experiences. Consequently, children's experiences, although enjoyable, do not challenge them enough to help them make good progress towards their early learning goals. The childminder interacts positively with children, helping them to learn some new skills. For example, she names the colours of the various wooden blocks and models how they can be stacked to build a tower. However, activities are overly directed by the childminder and do not give children enough opportunities to follow their own interest, explore independently and lead their own learning.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder has created positive partnerships with parents. She spends time getting to know families during settling-in visits and gathers information regarding children's routines. Therefore, the movement from home to the childminder's setting is stress-free for all children. Children are learning to mix with others away from the childminder's setting when she takes them to various venues, supporting their socialisation skills. Children are well behaved because the childminder uses age-appropriate methods to promote their good behaviour. The childminder praises children consistently. Therefore, their self-esteem grows and they feel valued in her care. The childminder promotes a healthy lifestyle for all children by ensuring they have opportunities for physical exercise indoors and outside.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Children are generally working within the range of development typical for their age. They are developing some of the basic skills to support their readiness for school. For example, their communication and language skills are developing and they can understand and follow simple instructions. However, the quality of teaching, assessment and planning requires improvement, in order to best support children to make good or better progress.
