This provision is good

 The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities. She has a range of clear procedures and policies that underpin her practice. These develop children's health, safety and general well-being effectively.  There are effective relationships established with parents. The childminder encourages parents to be involved with their children's learning and shares useful information about their progress.  The childminder teaches well. She has a clear view of how children learn and skilfully talks to children in ways that help to improve their understanding.  There is a well-established programme of training which the childminder uses to good effect. This includes attending appropriate courses and reading relevant articles. This helps her to improve her knowledge and skills of early years requirements.  The childminder supports children's emotional well-being effectively. She provides a welcoming environment and children respond positively to her friendly, caring manner.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasions, planned activities are not as well matched to children's learning needs as they could be.  Opportunities are sometimes missed to extend children's sense of pride and self- esteem.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 ensure activities for children are matched appropriately to their stage of development to enhance their learning  extend ways of building children's self-esteem and pride in their work.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's teaching and its impact on the children's learning.  The inspector checked documents, including the childminder's background suitability checks and training certificates.  The inspector looked at some of the childminder's planning documents, and discussed children's individual learning and development.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her self-evaluation processes.  The inspector looked at the childminder's policies and procedures, including those relating to safeguarding.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how to ensure children's welfare. This is enhanced by the implementation of good policies and procedures. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder attends training and reads relevant articles and literature to continually update and improve her skills. The childminder has developed her self- evaluation process well since registration. She has set clear goals to develop her practice. For example, she has recently purchased some new books for the quiet area. The childminder provides many opportunities for children to learn effectively about people and communities beyond their immediate experiences. Parents contribute to their children's initial assessments, to help the childminder plan from the very beginning, and are kept up to date with their children's learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes the children in play and often changes activities to follow children's natural curiosity and interests. For example, the childminder adapted an activity effectively to suit children's interests by changing from learning colours to a ball rolling activity initiated by them. Children are usually motivated and interested as they enjoy stimulating activities or explore the play equipment in the welcoming environment. They learn about respect and tolerance of others. For example, they join in activities to mark a range of cultural and religious festivals and explore using dolls, books and puzzles that reflect positive images of others with differing backgrounds.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder helps ensure children's healthy lifestyles well, such as through the provision of healthy snacks and meals. The children form strong emotional attachments with her. She is sensitive and responsive to their needs. Babies are encouraged to learn about safety, such as being careful as they learn to rock and crawl and pull themselves up to standing. The childminder provides a welcoming and well-resourced environment. Children have regular exercise and go on outings to the park, the library and local schools. For example, the childminder is visiting the local farm soon to enable children to have new experiences of petting animals. Children are effectively encouraged to develop good behaviour; the childminder praises the children's achievements, although she recognises that this could be done even more on occasions.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are happy, confident and eager learners. They laugh and giggle as they explore the feel of objects in a sensory basket. Children have opportunities to gain good early literacy, writing and mathematical skills so they are ready for their future learning.
