This provision is good

 The childminder has carefully reflected on the quality of her practice and has made effective improvements since the last inspection.  The quality of teaching is good. The childminder uses assessment well to build up a picture of individual children's progress and also to immediately plan for their next steps of learning.  Children and babies make good progress and develop the skills they need for future learning. Activities are stimulating and engage the children's interest. The childminder continually purchases new resources based on children's current interests and enthusiasms.  The childminder has a nurturing approach and this contributes to the effective way children settle into her care. Children offer the childminder hugs and cuddles and confidently make their requests and ideas known.  Children behave well and develop a good understanding of the importance of personal safety. They remain close to the childminder on outings. They learn to take safe risks as

they climb and balance on the apparatus at the park.

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although the childminder completes all the mandatory training, she has not yet fully explored ways to improve on her teaching to help children make the very best possible progress.  The childminder has not yet established extremely successful arrangements for sharing information and working in partnership with parents and the other early years settings that children attend.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 seek further professional development opportunities and focus on raising the quality of teaching and learning to an even higher level  explore different ways to encourage all parents to share information about their children's achievements at home  improve partnership working when children attend other early years settings and share information to effectively provide continuity in children's learning and development.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during indoor activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector accompanied the childminder and children on an outing to the nearby park.  The inspector viewed a focused activity with the childminder and discussed the children's progress and achievements.  The inspector viewed the children's development records.  The inspector reviewed evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder, self-evaluation, risk assessment and policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from written testimonials obtained by the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities to protect children from abuse or neglect. She knows the steps to take if she has a concern about a child in her care. The childminder carries out risk assessments and daily checks of her premises to ensure children remain safe. She has reviewed the health and safety arrangements with regard to the children's contact with her three dogs. The rear garden has been made out of bounds to minded children. Frequent outings are made to the nearby parks for outdoor play. Parents are invited to share their views and comments by completing questionnaires and they make very positive comments about the care provided.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children are motivated, inquisitive learners and benefit from the childminder's effective understanding of how they develop and learn. They engage in meaningful play that helps them develop their imagination. Children take part in role play scenarios and confidently involve the childminder and visitors in their games. The childminder uses conversations well to encourage children to talk about, and make links with, their experiences at home. Children use numbers as they play and explore volume and capacity as they play with sand and water. The childminder has successfully implemented changes to benefit the children's learning and development. A new electronic tool for assessing and tracking progress has been introduced to enable the childminder to quickly identify any gaps in learning, so no child gets left behind.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children effectively learn to adopt healthy lifestyles. They eat a variety of different fruit for snacks. Fresh air and exercise is part of the daily routine. There is ample indoor space for children and babies to develop their mobility skills. They push and pull wheeled toys with good control. Children play racing and chasing games at the local park and develop their coordination on a variety of apparatus. The childminder places a good emphasis on promoting opportunities for children to develop their communication and language skills. There are posters and pictures displayed in the playroom to help extend the vocabulary of children who speak English as an additional language. The childminder speaks clearly to children and obtains from parents useful words in the children's home language, so she can understand their requests.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children, including those who speak English as an additional language, make good progress from their starting points. Children learn to become independent as they are determined to put on their shoes by themselves. They listen attentively, follow instructions and learn to share and take turns with the toys. Children learn to look at books for pleasure and have easy access to writing materials to promote their literacy skills. Younger children accompany the childminder to the school when she collects older children. This helps younger children to become familiar with the school environment and means that children are supported in making the transfer on to full-time education.
