p.1

This provision is good

 The manager has worked well to make improvements since their last inspection. Staff now remind and support children to wash their hands with soap before eating. There are increased opportunities for children to build on what they learn at school.  Children are emotionally secure and happy at the club. The good relationships between children and staff support children's confidence and self-esteem well. Children are well cared for.  The manager ensures there is an effective programme of professional development, so staff's skills and knowledge are up to date.  Staff have a good understanding of how to meet children's needs. Children are free to choose to play indoors or outdoors, engaging in their choice of activities. They have space and freedom to relax and unwind after school.  Children are cooperative and behave well. Staff are good role models and support children well to set their own boundaries.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Staff do not always provide a full range of healthy choices and help children learn about a healthy diet.  The manager does not make the most of opportunities to gain the views of parents, to help her evaluate the effectiveness of the provision and make further improvements.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide children with healthier food choices and help them learn about a healthy diet  gain the views of parents more consistently as part of ongoing evaluation of the provision.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed how the children are collected from school and escorted to the after school club.  The inspector looked through a sample of documentation, including policies and staff suitability checks.  The inspector observed children and staff inside and outside.  The inspector spoke to the manager, parents, staff and children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The manager and staff are fully aware of what to do and who to contact if they have any concerns about a child in their care. They keep their knowledge of childcare issues up to date by completing regular training. For example, all staff have recently completed paediatric first aid qualifications and training on wider safeguarding issues, helping to ensure they support children's health and welfare needs well. The manager checks the ongoing suitability of staff to work with children at supervision meetings. She discusses staff practice with them to identify where they can make changes, which feeds in well to the self-evaluation process. Staff work well with parents and the schools children attend to share information about the children. This helps them to work consistently together to ensure children are emotionally secure and settled.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff know the children well and provide interesting activities. They talk to the children about what they are doing at school and make links where possible to build on children's interests and learning elsewhere. For example, the children said that they were looking at Ancient Egypt at school, so the manager brought in reference books and photographs of the pyramids to help consolidate children's learning. Children independently access a variety of resources which are suitable for their different ages and levels of activity. For example, some children engaged in a game of football started by a staff member, while others sat chatting in quiet groups. Children are confident, and enjoy their play and the relaxed atmosphere.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff follow secure routines and systems to keep children safe. For example, when children are collected from school, they all wear a high-visibility jacket with the name and phone number of the club printed on it. Staff ensure that the children cross roads with the assistance of the school crossing patrol person, and remind them to stay on the pavement when walking to the club. They set a good example to children and teach them how to be safe when outdoors. Children from the different schools mix well. At snack time, they all sit together in a large group and chat about their day. They play communal games, where all the children are welcome to join in. Children develop a good sense of achievement and have a positive attitude. They receive good praise and encouragement from staff in their activities.
