This provision is good

 The quality of the childminder's interactions with children is consistently good. Children are interested and on task as they play and explore. Children's behaviour is positive and the childminder is skilled at helping children negotiate and resolve conflict.  The childminder uses assessment well to help children learn. She uses tracking to help her identify any gaps in children's development and adapts her provision so that all children make good progress from their starting points.  The childminder uses her experience well to help her develop strategies to help children with special educational needs or disability. She works well with parents and other professionals to help ensure children receive continuity in their care and learning.  Overall, the childminder evaluates and reflects well on her setting. This helps her to make targeted improvements and identify effective training programmes. For example,

p.1

This provision is good

the childminder has recently attended training that has helped her to support children to improve their vocabulary and conversational skills.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder sometimes misses opportunities to support children's early writing skills during their play.  Children who prefer to learn outside do not always benefit from a wide range of stimulating learning across all areas.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 make better use of opportunities that arise during play activities to encourage children to develop their early writing skills  continue to develop the outdoor learning environment, to support further those children who prefer to learn outside.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children, inside and outside.  The inspector looked at documentation, including children's learning journals.  The inspector spoke with children and took the written views of parents into account.  The inspector conducted a leadership and management meeting, and a joint observation with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding procedures and child protection issues to support children's welfare. The childminder is good at evaluating the quality of her provision and this helps to improve outcomes for children. For example, the childminder has reviewed and adapted her observation and assessment procedures, and this helps her to plan carefully with children's next steps in mind. Children develop skills that will help them as they move on to their next stage of learning. For example, they learn to put on their own shoes and get ready to go outside to play. The childminder has built strong relationships with other settings and professionals. This helps children experience continuity and a shared understanding of their needs.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children practise new skills as they play. For example, children learn to handle books carefully and retell the story using the pictures. Children improve their early reading skills and their love of books. The childminder has developed a range of exciting activities and children are keen to take part. For example, children enjoyed playing with water and experimenting with pipes and jugs. Children are free to explore and make lots of discoveries as they play. The childminder is good at extending learning and helping them to make links in their understanding. For example, children enjoyed looking at butterflies in the garden, read a book about bugs and then made caterpillars from a range of construction materials.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are settled and happy. Their behaviour is good. For example, children help each other up onto the climbing frame and celebrate each other's success. Children have plenty of time to follow their own ideas. For example, they spent ages snipping straws with scissors and popping them into play dough. They get lots of fresh air and exercise. The childminder has built lovely relationships with children that support their emotional well- being effectively. She praises children continually and encourages them in all their attempts to help them succeed.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are engaged and interested. They make many independent decisions and thrive in a well-resourced indoor environment. Children operate with growing levels of independence that will help them as they move on to their next stage in learning. Children are consistently kind and helpful to one another, and learn to share.
