This provision is good

 The childminder uses good-quality interactions with children to help them make sense of the world around them.  Children have a broad range of opportunities to explore the natural world. For example, they learn to take care of living things and they explore simple scientific ideas.  The childminder works closely in partnership with parents, carers and other settings that children attend to support continuity in their care and learning.  Children make good progress in preparation for their next stages in learning and for school. The childminder uses her effective assessment procedures to identify where children need support and plans activities relevant to their individual needs.  The childminder is a good role model. She helps children learn about positive behaviour, good hygiene, sensible safety procedures and the importance of respecting others.  The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding procedures to protect

children's welfare, having attended relevant training.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder sometimes misses opportunities to encourage children to think of their own ideas and solutions to problems, for example, by providing a wider range of materials for children to experiment with.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to think of their own ideas and solutions to problems to fully challenge their capabilities.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities indoors and outdoors.  The inspector and the childminder observed and discussed an activity together.  The inspector talked to the childminder about her practice at appropriate points throughout the inspection.  The inspector sampled documentation, including children's development records and the childminder's training records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder organises her practice successfully to provide children with a broad range of learning opportunities and good-quality care. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to respond in the event of any concerns about children's welfare. The childminder reflects on her practice routinely in partnership with parents and other professionals to identify her strengths and areas for development. She shows a strong commitment to ongoing improvement. For example, she has completed training in play therapy to help her follow children's interests effectively. She plans to extend this to improve outcomes for children further.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder plans stimulating activities that encourage children to explore. For example, she challenges children to find out how many toy bricks it takes to sink a boat they have made. She makes suggestions to extend activities and explains what is happening to aid children's understanding. The childminder keeps parents well informed about their children's progress and encourages them to support learning at home. She has good links in place with local settings, for example, using communication books to share information about children's development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides an exciting learning environment. For example, in the garden she provides opportunities for children to look after frogs and chickens, and to challenge their physical skills on a rope swing. She has a gentle approach and encourages children to feel confident and secure. The childminder supports children to learn about people who are different from themselves, for example, by travelling into a local city to experience its diverse population. She encourages a healthy diet and teaches children good hygiene practices, such as washing their hands before eating and after using the toilet.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop a wide range of skills and a positive attitude towards learning. They become confident over time in caring for living things, such as being brave enough to stroke a chicken and collect its eggs. Children develop good physical skills as they explore different equipment and negotiate space successfully. They develop a wide range of vocabulary and use language to express their thoughts and feelings. Children respond well to instructions and suggestions, and they demonstrate friendly behaviour. They become absorbed in activities and show a keen curiosity in the world around them.
