This provision is good

 The childminder has a good selection of appropriate good-quality toys and resources for babies and children. She supports children's development and learning well in all areas of learning with stimulating and challenging activities.  Children gain in confidence and feel safe to explore their surroundings, take suitable risks and experiment in their play. The childminder builds close and affectionate relationships with children.  The childminder understands how children learn and develop. She uses her experience and knowledge effectively to plan activities to each child's different needs and stages of development to improve their outcomes.  Children's progress is typical for their age. All children make good progress from when they start, including children with special educational needs.  The childminder takes into account and values the views of parents and children as she evaluates and improves her provision.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder misses some opportunities to work more effectively in partnership with other settings when sharing information about children's development and how they learn.  The childminder does not always fully develop children's understanding and awareness of other cultures and people's differences and similarities.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make more effective use of the good partnership working with other settings that children attend to extend information sharing even more to support greater continuity for children  build on children's understanding about other cultures and similarities and differences between themselves and others.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector was shown around the parts of the childminder's home used for childminding.  The inspector observed the impact of teaching on children's enjoyment and development.  The inspector spoke with the children to gain an understanding of their views.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good awareness of how to keep children safe and keeps her policies and procedures up to date. She knows what to do if she has a child protection concern about a child. The childminder continually updates her knowledge and understanding about how children learn. For example, she attends training courses and reads relevant childcare publications. This has a positive impact on her quality of teaching and supports her provision of stimulating and challenging experiences for children. She gets to know the children well and has high expectations of them.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder establishes clear starting points for children from gathering accurate information from parents and close observations from when children start. She uses effective ongoing observations and assessments to ensure that she identifies and addresses any gaps in their learning. The childminder can easily see when a child is beginning to lose interest in an activity and quickly ensures that she regains their engagement. For example, she encouraged children well to squirt water through a cannon, where previously they struggled to achieve this. This motivated them and enabled them to continue with the activity for a much longer time.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are inquisitive and happy to ask for help from the childminder. The childminder supports them effectively to gain independence in their play and personal care needs. For example, she demonstrated how to fill up a watering can from the water tray and children were then able to do this on their own. The childminder follows individual sleep routines with younger children and this helps ensure they do not get over tired or upset. She provides healthy balanced meals and talks to children about the benefits of eating well. The childminder supports children's good behaviour. For example, she gives effective and timely praise to children, boosting their self-esteem and confidence. She encourages children to be tolerant and to respect others' opinions and choices.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children have good levels of concentration and keep trying activities until they achieve. They work well together and happily share resources. For example, when playing with modelling dough they wait patiently for other children to finish with tools that they want to use. They become confident learners and creative thinkers. Babies and very young children develop a strong personal, social and emotional development. This gives them a secure base from which they gain and learn other skills. All children are well-prepared for moving on to other settings and eventually to school.
