This provision is good

 The childminder is a reflective and well-qualified practitioner. She continually develops her knowledge and skills. The childminder and her co-childminder attend a good range of training courses, network meetings and local groups.  The quality of teaching is good, and at times, outstanding. Children are highly inquisitive and motivated learners. The childminder effectively follows the children's interests. She makes good use of the opportunities that arise from following children's explorations.  The childminder ensures that the learning environments are inviting, stimulating and highly engaging, both indoors and outside. Children make good progress and develop the skills they need to move on to the next stage in their learning.  The childminder has a warm and caring rapport with the children. She successfully works in partnerships with parents to support children's care and learning. There are

very effective two-way systems for sharing information about children's needs and their achievements.  The childminder and her co-childminder work very effectively with other early years professionals and the local primary schools. These partnerships are used extremely well to promote continuity in children's learning and to prepare them for starting school.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder is not always robustly monitoring and adapting her routines when new children join the setting.  The childminder has very recently made changes to the security arrangements in her home and these have not yet been fully tested.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen monitoring of daily practice to ensure that routines fully take into account the needs of new children when they join the setting  continue to review the changes made to the security arrangements to check that these successfully keep children safe.

p.2

Inspection activities

 Ofsted carried out this inspection as a result of a risk assessment following information received from the childminder.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector viewed focused activities with the childminder and her co-childminder and discussed the children's progress and achievements.  The inspector viewed a sample of the children's development records.  The inspector reviewed evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder and her co-childminder, self-evaluation, risk assessment and policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day and from their written testimonials obtained by the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder is an accomplished professional who is extremely passionate about her work and loves every minute she spends with the children. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has completed safeguarding training and understands the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child in their care. Following a recent incident when a child left the premises unnoticed and unsupervised, the childminder notified Ofsted in line with legal requirements. Although this was not a minded child, the childminder took immediate action to improve security to prevent the likelihood of such an event reoccurring. The front door now has a security chain and an alarm has been fitted to alert the childminder that the door is open. Policies, procedures and risk assessments in relation to how the childminder and her co-childminder supervise children have been strengthened. They now constantly ensure that children are always within their sight and

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children benefit from the attention of the well-qualified childminder who is enthusiastic and makes learning fun. She works closely with her co-childminder as joint key persons to assess progress and ensure that children's interests drive the activities provided. They carefully plan experiences that match children's learning priorities and cover all areas of learning. Children concentrate and persist at their chosen activities. They have great fun investigating and exploring with play dough, sand, compost and water. They learn mathematical language as they discuss the size and shapes of pots and containers and describe if these are full or empty. They practise their early writing skills as they make marks using clipboards and pens. The parents spoken to during the inspection express their delight with the progress their children have made.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder warmly welcomes children and their families into her home. Children's social and emotional well-being are promoted well. The childminder teaches children to show respect, take turns with the toys and to listen attentively to instructions. Children learn about their personal safety and the need to behave responsibly. The childminder consistently draws children's attention to safety routines, such as putting on sun lotion, wearing sun hats and drinking plenty of water while playing outdoors in hot weather. The childminder provides children with a variety of nutritious and balanced meals and snacks. This helps to promote the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Children enjoy developing their independence skills as they prepare the fruit and pour their drinks.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children, including those who receive funding, make very good progress in relation to their starting points. Children gain the necessary skills and positive attitudes to prepare them in readiness for starting school. They are encouraged to have a go and try things for themselves. They thoroughly enjoy activities that help them to develop their scientific knowledge and understanding of the world around them.
