She has a secure knowledge of how to protect children from harm. The childminder monitors children's progress well and shares her findings with parents. She identifies any gaps in children's learning and quickly plans for them. The childminder keeps her knowledge and skills up to date in a variety of ways. For example, she attends training, shares ideas with others and completes her own research.

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and provides a wealth of exciting experiences for them. She uses her observations of children to assess their needs. She ensures that activities are enjoyable, and she plans around children's individual needs and interests. For example, children have fun when they explore clay and create different items with it. The childminder seizes opportunities to further mathematical concepts. For instance, she encourages counting as children add candles to the cakes they have made, and discusses shapes and colours. The childminder pronounces words clearly to help children develop their vocabularies. They talk happily as they play and investigate.

p.3

The childminder is kind and caring. She works with parents to provide continuity of care and to help children settle quickly. Children form positive relationships with her, and are happy and safe in her care. The childminder supports children's awareness of healthy lifestyles well. For example, children have daily opportunities for outdoor play and fresh air, and eat healthy snacks and meals. The childminder is vigilant as children play and is always close by. She ensures that children learn to keep themselves safe. For instance, children know to wear hats and discuss putting on sun-protection cream in hot weather.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress. They are confident to explore and try things for themselves. They are self-assured and work within, or beyond, the range of development typical for their age. Children develop an interest in early reading and writing. For example, they enjoy looking at books independently and with the childminder. They gain the skills they need for the next stage in their learning and school.
