This provision is outstanding

 Leaders and managers aspire to provide excellent learning and care for the children in the nursery. They have created a, 'can do' culture and empower staff to use their initiative to provide the best possible outcomes for children.  Knowledgeable staff use expert practice to promote children's learning and care. They know the children well and understand when to move them on to the next stage in their learning.  Staff are astute at noting and assessing the attainments of children, including those who have special educational needs or disability. They work diligently to close gaps in learning so that children make exceptional progress from their starting points.  Children are cared for in an extremely welcoming, inviting environment with exciting resources indoors and outside. They learn and play in imaginative ways, such as using real pots and cooking equipment in the mud kitchen.  Children have exceptional opportunities to develop their understanding of communities.

p.1

This provision is outstanding

They learn to greet others in a range of languages and they design displays featuring flags of many countries, including some that reflect children's diverse backgrounds.  Children develop impressive levels of independence. They quickly find their belongings because photographs and labels are displayed at their level where these can be easily seen. All children, including babies have opportunities to select resources for play activities.  The partnerships with parents are extremely successful. Parents are full of praise for the excellent communication that ensures children's learning needs are met fully. They value the genuine, 'family atmosphere' and how well children's safety and care are managed by the staff. Parents say that children flourish in the nursery.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 review the impact that the development of the outside space has on children's understanding of the natural environment.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the nursery manager.  The inspector held meetings with the nursery manager and provider. She looked at relevant documentation, such as the nursery's self-evaluation and evidence of the suitability of staff working in the nursery.  The inspector spoke to a small selection of parents and also read written feedback obtained by the setting from parents the previous day.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is outstanding

Leaders and managers are highly committed to maintaining continuous improvement in the nursery. All staff engage in robust self-evaluation of their practice and take responsibility for trialling new ways of working. Parents and children have opportunities to contribute to reviews of the nursery. Leaders and managers have plans to develop the outside space further to help children learn more about the natural environment. They understand the importance of reviewing the impact of any changes they make, in order to ensure that outcomes for children are maintained at the highest level. Staff attend training to enhance their skills. For example, recent professional development has helped staff in preparing children comprehensively for their move on to school. Staff work exceedingly well with local schools and share information about children's needs and achievements with visiting teachers. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. All staff are well

informed about their responsibilities to protect children. All records required for the smooth running of the nursery, and to meet children's needs are meticulously maintained.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is outstanding

Highly experienced, enthusiastic staff understand how to promote children's learning extremely well. They are highly skilled at meeting children's individual learning needs and extend learning experiences admirably. For example, they encourage pre-school children to count by following an, 'anti-clockwise' direction. They help children to recognise signs, such as for add and equal during simple calculations, using templates very effectively. Staff consistently assess children's achievements and include high levels of challenge to raise attainment. Two-year-old children have exciting opportunities to learn about worms and repeat words, such as wriggly. Staff make learning fun as they model how to move their bodies from side to side. Staff have very high expectations of children and count bricks while toddlers stack these. They then include variation and repetition by encouraging toddlers to point to each brick during counting. Children's learning is

promoted extremely well due to the highly commendable skills of the staff.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

Children are sensitively nurtured in the nursery. Staff provide a caring environment in which children have a real sense of who they are. Children's achievements are celebrated. Staff draw attention to examples of their work, such as their early writing. Children develop an excellent understanding of good health and hygiene. Pre-school children take great delight in brushing their teeth after lunch. Babies recognise and choose snacks by looking at cards which show pictures of the fruit on offer. All children know what is expected of them. Staff use a firm but gentle approach to encouraging children's good behaviour. Children's welfare is promoted thoroughly.

p.3

Outcomes for children are outstanding

All groups of children make excellent progress in their learning. Children are highly motivated because staff give lots of praise and support. Children are active learners who make decisions about their leaning and play. All children are prepared remarkably well for the next stage in learning within the nursery or for their move on to school.
