This provision is good
The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn. She provides an interesting and varied range of activities. Children make good progress in all areas of their development. The childminder effectively supports children's communication and language skills. For example, she talks to them about what they are doing and repeats words back, to help children learn the correct pronunciation of words. The childminder has positive working relationships with parents. She shares information regularly with them to ensure consistency in children's learning and care. The childminder has a kind and caring manner and responds sensitively to the individual needs of young children. Children behave well and understand the routines and boundaries. They learn to take turns and they are developing good friendships. The childminder recognises the importance of working with other professionals involved

in children's lives, to provide continuity in their care and learning.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder misses some opportunities to help children to explore and use reading materials fully, to strengthen their early literacy skills. The childminder does not always pursue all available opportunities to develop her knowledge further, to raise the quality of her teaching to the highest level.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

improve children's opportunities to access and use books further to help promote their early reading skills make better use of opportunities to extend professional knowledge and skills fully, to improve the already good quality of teaching even further.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder interacting with the children and spoke with the childminder about her teaching practices. The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection regarding her practice, and the arrangements for observation, assessment and planning. The inspector checked the documentation the childminder uses to support her practice. The inspector read and discussed the childminder's self-evaluation processes. The inspector and childminder completed a joint observation of the children playing together.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder reflects well on her practice and she has made good improvements since the last inspection. For example, she has improved her understanding of monitoring children's progress. She uses her assessments well to help plan and provide good learning experiences. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her role and responsibility to keep children safe. She refreshes her safeguarding knowledge regularly and accesses training, such as on new legislation. The childminder is aware of the signs and symptoms that may raise cause for concern, and the procedures to follow for reporting these, to protect children from the risk of harm. The childminder seeks some opportunities to update her professional knowledge. For example, she reads relevant childcare publications and liaises with other childminders to share practice ideas.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder has good expectations of what each child can achieve. She knows the children well and plans activities that engage and interest them. Children have many opportunities to strengthen their mathematical skills. For example, while children solve puzzles, she encourages them to look closely at the picture to sort, categorise and count. Children show an interest in the activities and spend extended periods concentrating. For example, children have great fun rolling and kneading the playdough. The childminder allows children to explore this activity and extends their interests. For example, she supports children to use their imagination as they make animal shapes with the playdough.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder is consistent in her approach to managing behaviour, and children quickly learn the difference between right and wrong. Children learn independence skills and eagerly help, such as in daily tasks. For example, they hand out plates and cutlery for their snacks, and choose for themselves what they would like to play with and willingly tidy up the toys. The childminder has a good understanding of how to encourage children's health and well-being. She recognises the importance of providing children with daily opportunities for fresh air and exercise. For example, she makes very good use of the local parks, where children can run around safely.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children make good progress and learn important skills for the future that prepare them well for school. For example, they practise making letters of the alphabet while exploring the playdough, and count during everyday routines. They demonstrate good social skills while playing together, and learn to share and take turns.
