They develop strong, affectionate relationships with the childminder, who supports their individual needs very well. Children's behaviour is excellent, and they show that they feel extremely emotionally secure.  Children who learn to speak other languages receive excellent support as they develop confidence and fluency in using English. The childminder is extremely good at encouraging their communication and language development, working very effectively with parents and other professionals to provide consistency in planning.  The childminder rigorously monitors all aspects of her practice exceptionally well to

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children engaged in learning activities.  The inspector and the childminder observed children engaged in an activity and talked about their progress and behaviour.  The inspector read feedback from parents about their children's care and learning.  The inspector talked to the childminder about her self-evaluation, and how she monitors the effectiveness of the learning provision.  The inspector sampled records the childminder is required to keep, including her safeguarding procedures, and discussed her understanding of these.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is outstanding

The childminder is extremely committed to achieving and sustaining exceptionally high standards. She constantly seeks to improve her knowledge and skills, and measures the effectiveness of any improvements she makes by how children respond. For example, learning and using sign language with children has been highly effective in helping babies and children with limited speech to communicate their needs more clearly. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder attends training and meetings to keep up to date with Local Safeguarding Children Board procedures and ensure her practice reflects these. She provides extremely good safeguarding information to parents. For example, she raises their awareness of legislation and what they can do to help keep children safe.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is outstanding

The childminder uses her excellent observation and assessments of children to plan highly challenging activities that engage them very well. For example, she uses photographs of children's families extremely effectively to develop children's language and communication as they talk about people they love. The childminder's excellent preparation ensures children of different ages enjoy participating in activities together. For example, during a lively musical activity, babies bounced and shook percussion instruments with help from the childminder, while older children used puppets to confidently lead the singing. The childminder uses every opportunity to extend children's learning. For example, she encouraged children when furnishing the doll's house to talk about the different rooms, the furniture they need, and compare these to their homes. The childminder does not always extend children's mathematical learning as well as other areas of learning. The

childminder successfully involves parents in their children's learning, making very effective use of information about home learning when planning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

Children's safety awareness is excellent. They thoroughly enjoy potentially risky activities, such as joining wood using hammers and nails. They showed an extremely good understanding of the possible hazards to achieve safety. Children cooperate and work together extremely well. For example, they agreed which of them would decorate each of the rooms in the doll's house, and they shared out the furniture between them.

p.3

Outcomes for children are outstanding

All children develop excellent skills that prepare them extremely well for the next stage in their learning, including starting school. They are highly independent and frequently refuse help from the childminder, and try to do things for themselves. For example, children were adamant they could peel bananas without the childminder starting them off, and persevered until they succeeded.
