This provision is good

 The childminder has a strong drive to improve her practice and takes appropriate action, seeking advice, training and support. She has made secure improvements since her last inspection and these have had a positive impact on her teaching, children's learning and care. Parents are complimentary about the service they receive.  Children form good relationships with the childminder. They develop good communication and social skills and the childminder interacts with children in a positive manner. Children are happy, settled and secure in her care.  The qualified childminder completes regular and precise assessments of children's play. She identifies what they know and can do and she plans for their future learning. This contributes to the good progress children make.  Children have lots of toys, resources and activities to explore, which keeps them engaged and active in their play. They show curiosity and imagination and demonstrate

positive relationships with their friends and adults.  The childminder carefully enhances children's learning. She encourages them to count, helping to promote their mathematical skills. She gives explanations as they play which help their speech and language development.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always teach children that print in English flows from left to right to support their literacy skills even further.  The childminder does not fully utilise opportunities for parents to share what they know about their children's learning at home.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance the opportunities for children to recognise that print in English flows from left to right, in order to help support their development in literacy even further  maximise the opportunities to gather information from parents about their children's development at home, to complement teaching and plan even more precisely for the next steps in children's learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector had a tour of the areas used for childminding. She also completed a joint observation with the childminder and discussed children's learning.  The inspector looked at the childminder's planning documentation, children's learning and development files and their assessment records.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualifications and training certificates, including evidence of her suitability and the suitability of all people living and working on the premises.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation form, risk assessments and policy documents, including the safeguarding policy and procedures for the safe management of the provision.  The inspector spoke to a small selection of parents during the inspection and took

account of their views. She also read written feedback from parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is aware of her responsibility to protect children from abuse and neglect. She has firm links with the local authority and attends a range of training and local cluster meetings related to children's welfare and development. Policies, procedures and risk assessments are annually reviewed and promote children's well-being and safety, both in the home and when on outings. This helps to minimise any potential hazards. The childminder regularly reviews and monitors all children's progress. She reflects on her practice and asks for parents' views on how she could improve her service. This helps her to identify priorities for development and improve outcomes for children. The childminder has built links with other professionals to ensure children's care needs are always met. She is committed to the continuous improvement of her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of child development and how children learn. Children eagerly collect up balls naming the colours and counting them. The childminder reinforces and extends their mathematical thinking and language. Her interactions with children are skilful and support their development and learning. She offers resources and demonstrates how toys work to promote babies' fundamental skills. This motivates younger children to move and effectively supports their physical development. Older children demonstrate their creativity and interests in early writing. They make marks on cards and point out and name items of interest. The childminder points out letters in children's names and uses this to engage and motivate them further. This enables children to make connections in their learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children demonstrate that they feel safe and comfortable in this warm and welcoming environment. The childminder collects good quality information from parents when children first start and this helps to efficiently meet their care needs. She effectively involves parents in initial assessments of children's learning. Children have plenty of opportunities to play outdoors and be physically active. The childminder creates a stimulating environment where children have a good range of resources to choose from. This helps to motivate children and builds their confidence in the decisions they make. The childminder promotes good hygiene procedures which help children to learn about healthy lifestyles.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and are working within the expected levels for their age, including those who speak English as an additional language. They are becoming successful learners and confident individuals. Children are active in their play and seek out others to share their experiences. They sing songs and rhymes and enjoy others joining in, extending their vocabulary. Children are inquisitive and gain good communication and imaginative skills. They are developing the confidence and skills they need to support them when they start nursery or school.
