Inspection activities
The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector observed the quality of teaching and the impact this had on children's learning. The inspector took account of the views of parents, provided in writing. The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder and discussed children's learning and development. The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of the childminder and looked at a selection of children's records and safeguarding procedures, and discussed her self- evaluation process.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder knows how to evaluate her setting to make improvements that continually improve her practice. She gains the views of parents and children to make positive changes. For example, she has improved the outside play area to make this more accessible for children. The childminder has a good knowledge of how to keep children safe. She uses thorough risk assessments to identify any potential hazards and takes action to minimise these swiftly. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps her knowledge up to date through regular training. She has a thorough understanding of local child protection procedures and what action she would take if she had concerns about the welfare of a child.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children are enthusiastic learners. They enjoy new activities and the childminder uses a range of good teaching skills to build on what children know and can do. For example, children learn to match written numbers with quantities. The childminder skilfully extends an activity to help children learn to how to use basic addition and subtraction skills in their play. The childminder encourages children's communication skills well. Children are confident and articulate in their conversations. They use a wide range of vocabulary to share their thoughts and ideas. The childminder checks children's progress and communicates effectively with parents, through a good range of methods that promotes learning at home.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children behave well and show care and concern for others. Their emotional well-being is supported through the childminder's positive interaction. Children learn how to play cooperatively as they take turns and share resources well. The childminder teaches children about how to keep themselves safe. For example, children learn why it is important to wear sunscreen and hats and to drink regularly to keep themselves physically well when playing outdoors. The childminder prepares children well for their next stages in learning. For instance, children learn how to be independent and can manage some age- appropriate tasks for themselves, such as putting on their shoes and collecting their own drinks when going in the garden.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their starting points. They gain skills that prepare them well for their move to pre-school. They develop good social skills and enjoy the company of other children. They gain good self-esteem and a willingness to try new activities. For example, children enjoyed finding letters in the paddling pool and sounded out some of letters as they developed their early literacy skills.
