This provision is good

 The childminder has a good knowledge of how children learn. She provides a wide range of interesting and stimulating play experiences. Children make good progress from their initial starting points.  The childminder is a good role model. She is very caring and nurturing, and children form close relationships with her and each other. Children are tolerant and thoughtful. They behave well and receive praise and encouragement as they share and take turns.  The childminder talks with children about the importance of simple safety practices. For example, she teaches them to understand why routines such as applying regular sun cream are important to their health and well-being.  The childminder continually reflects upon her practice and has identified areas that she intends to enhance. She has clear action plans in place for continual improvements to children's outcomes and the service she provides.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 In her eagerness to support children, the childminder does not always give them enough time to lead their own play and represent their own ideas.  The childminder does not gather enough information from parents about children's learning and achievements at home to complement her teaching.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to lead their own play and to represent their own ideas  gather more information from parents about children's learning and achievements at home, and use this to help complement teaching.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector sampled a range of documents, including children's information records, safeguarding procedures, attendance registers, and a selection of policies and procedures.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder, had a tour of the areas used for childminding and took into account the views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of the procedure to follow should any concerns about a child's welfare arise. Furthermore, she thoroughly assesses and minimises risks to children so that they can safely explore their surroundings. The childminder monitors and tracks children's progress and any gaps in their development are swiftly identified and effectively addressed. The childminder regularly updates her professional development. For example, she seeks out and accesses many relevant training opportunities to help develop her teaching further. She seeks and values parents' views on the service she provides. The childminder has developed good links with other settings to support children's future moves and provide continuity in care and learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows children well and regularly observes and assesses them as they play. She uses this information to help guide their learning and plan for the next steps in their development. The childminder supports children's communication and language skills well. For example, she responds to children's attempts to make conversations and repeats words back to them. Children are given chances to develop their interest in programmable toys. For example, they excitedly press buttons to discover different sounds and move their bodies to the music they make. The childminder supports children's early mathematical skills well. For example, she talks about size and counts with children as they transport, fill and pour sand and water, using different utensils. Children concentrate well and play cooperatively.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder supports children's emotional well-being and sense of belonging successfully. She knows children well and provides a stimulating, warm and welcoming environment. The childminder teaches children good hygiene practices from an early age. For example, children know to wash their hands thoroughly at appropriate times. Children have regular opportunities to be physically active in the fresh air. For example, they access the childminder's garden and go on regular walks in the local area. Children learn to value and respect people's differences and similarities. For example, they visit local groups and celebrate a range of festivals that positively represent diversity.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

The childminder prepares children well for future learning and the eventual move on to school. Children are happy, independent and sociable. They enjoy learning and are confident as they eagerly explore. Children show a keen interest in books and are able to develop their early writing skills.
