Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not hold a current paediatric first-aid certificate as required. This compromises her ability to assist children in emergencies.  The childminder does not have up-to-date knowledge of the learning and development requirements. She is not familiar with all of the areas of learning. Therefore, her ability to support children's all-round progress is limited.  The childminder is not aware of the requirement to complete progress summary checks for children aged between two and three years and share these with parents.  The childminder's programme of continued professional development does not ensure good outcomes for children.  The childminder does not evaluate her practice consistently well to help identify those areas that need improving to ensure children reach good or better outcomes.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children enjoy their time with the childminder and become engaged in activities that appeal to their interests. They develop a positive attitude to their learning.  Children play happily and are confident in the care of the childminder. She offers them lots of attention and praise, which helps them to feel valued and supports their emotional well-being.  Children learn how to keep themselves safe and healthy. For example, they wash their hands before cooking and discuss the dangers of the hot oven.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

Due Date

 obtain and maintain a valid paediatric first-aid qualification 31/08/2016  update and improve knowledge of the learning and development requirements and support children to make good or better progress in all areas of learning 31/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

 develop knowledge and understanding of the progress check for children aged between two and three years and ensure these are completed and shared with parents 31/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

 implement a programme of professional development that improves outcomes for children. 31/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 strengthen arrangements for evaluating practice that identify areas that need improving and raise outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of the suitability of the provider and other records related to her practice.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder's lack of knowledge of the learning and development requirements means that children are not effectively supported to make good or better progress in all areas of learning. The childminder has taken steps to address actions and recommendations raised at her last inspection. She now uses what she learns from observations, generally, to plan activities that build upon what children already know and can do. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has suitable knowledge of what to do if she has a concern about a child's welfare. The childminder reflects on activities with the children and changes resources to match their learning needs. However, she does not evaluate all areas of her practice rigorously enough to identify weaknesses and plan for improvements. She does not take steps to maintain and build on her knowledge.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder does not review children's progress between the ages of two and three years. Also, she does not provide parents with a written summary of this. The childminder teaches children about shapes and numbers. For example, they count and compare the shapes and sizes of ingredients the childminder has prepared as they make pizzas. This helps children to develop some skills in mathematics. The childminder has established relationships with parents and other settings that help to provide a consistent approach to children's learning. They share information and discuss how to support children's future learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children's welfare is not fully protected because the childminder has failed to maintain a current paediatric first-aid certificate. Therefore, she is unable to respond to children's accidents quickly and appropriately. The childminder forms warm relationships with children in her care that help them to feel safe and secure. She reminds children to be kind and to share. This contributes to their good behaviour and they learn to understand the needs and feelings of others. The childminder encourages children to take on responsibilities, such as setting up and clearing away activities. She also supports them to develop self-care skills, such as managing their own clothing. This helps to promote children's independence and prepare them for when they move on to school. Children benefit from fresh air and exercise. This helps to promote their physical well-being.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Although children make some progress, this is not fully promoted due to the childminder's poor knowledge of the areas of learning. Children practise some key skills that help to prepare them for school. For example, they show confidence as they select their own activities and lead their own play and learning. They learn to listen, pay attention and follow instructions. Children show a great interest in books and this helps to promote their early skills in literacy.
