Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder interacting with children, both inside and outside. The inspector examined documents relating to the safeguarding of children. The inspector read the childminder's self-evaluation and her documents relating to the progress of children and how children's interests are used to plan activities. The inspector read the comments made by parents and took account of their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder is ambitious and has high expectations of children and herself. She uses her self-evaluation well and seeks the views of parents to improve her practice. The childminder regularly shares information with parents and staff at other settings that children attend. This enables effective communication to support children's learning and progress, and provides a consistent approach. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection matters and knows the procedures to follow to report any concerns about children's welfare.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder gathers information from parents when children start with her. She regularly observes them and completes detailed assessments to monitor their achievements and progress. The childminder extends children's learning well. For example, she asks good questions that get children to think before they answer. This helps deepen their understanding, such as when they talk about road safety or as they learn to count. The childminder effectively develops children's speech and communication skills, for instance, as she clearly repeats sentences back to children. The childminder provides a wide range of activities to develop children's physical skills and independence. For example, children are fully involved and engaged as they chopped up fruit to make a healthy smoothie for snack time.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder provides a stimulating and welcoming environment. She has established good routines to ensure children learn to be responsible for their personal and hygiene needs. For example, after stroking the cat, the children knew to wash their hands. Children are encouraged to be very independent, such as freely choosing their activities or toys, spreading crackers with cream cheese or washing fruit. Children happily explore their environment, confident that the childminder is close by to provide reassurance and support when required.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in line with others of their age. They learn the key skills they need for the next steps in their learning or school. For example, they have a good interest in books and like to listen to stories. Children are very confident and use their imagination well. For example, they made very good use of the available resources outside, such as stones and toy animals, to build on their play in the water tray. Children develop positive social skills, such as when they mix with other children at weekly toddler groups and activity sessions.
