Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder's attendance records do not always detail the children's hours of attendance.  Assessments made of the children's learning and the monitoring of their progress are inconsistent. This means that the planning of activities is not always precisely focused on children's individual learning needs.  The childminder does not evaluate her practice well enough to identify weaknesses in the provision. Additionally, she does not make the most of available professional development opportunities to further develop her practice.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder joins in the children's play, building on their interests. Children are praised for their efforts and achievements, which encourages them to persist and builds their self-esteem.  Children are happy and demonstrate that they feel safe and emotionally secure. They develop sound relationships with the childminder and her assistant.  Children are effectively supported to manage their feelings and behaviour. They are encouraged to be kind to one another, to share and take their turn.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure the daily record of the names of the children looked after on the premises includes their hours of attendance 08/07/2016

p.2

Due Date

 ensure the assessments made of children's learning are accurate and effectively used to monitor progress and plan challenging activities that sharply focus on their precise learning needs. 05/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 develop systems for self-evaluation and engage in available professional development opportunities in order to expand understanding of current best practice and improve the quality of the provision further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of the childminder's teaching during activities indoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed joint observations with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of the childminder, household members and her assistant.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from documentation completed by them.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not consistently implement some aspects of the requirements of the early years foundation stage. She does not always accurately record the arrival and departure times of the children. This compromises the effective management of the provision. The childminder supervises the work of her assistant. They have both obtained a paediatric first-aid qualification and are able to attend to any minor injuries. However, the childminder has not considered further professional development opportunities to keep abreast of current early years practice. Furthermore, self-evaluation is not sufficiently effective in identifying areas for improvement. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder minimises potential hazards in her home. She is aware of the signs of abuse and understands procedures to follow should she have any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder develops appropriate relationships with parents and is

continuing to develop partnerships with other early years providers.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder demonstrates that she has a general overview of the children's interests and development. She has made some observations of the children as they play. However, she does not always accurately evaluate and use this information to purposely plan challenging activities. Additionally, the childminder's procedures to monitor children's progress and help her to identify any gaps in their learning are not sufficiently robust. This hinders her ability to identify any gaps in the children's learning in a timely manner. Nevertheless, children enjoy their time in the care of the childminder and her assistant. They are introduced to new vocabulary, such as scrunch and crackle, as they explore the texture of the pasta. Younger children oink like a pig and roar like a dinosaur as they identify animals. They complete puzzles, pretend to make cups of tea for their friends and match utensils by their colour.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Weaknesses in leadership and management means that some aspects of the children's welfare cannot be fully assured. The childminder seeks information from parents about each child's needs and stage of development when they start to attend. This appropriately supports continuity in their care. Children seek reassurance if required and happily include the childminder and her assistant in their play. Children have opportunities to be physically active in the fresh air. Their dietary needs are appropriately met. Children sit well at the table and are encouraged to use good manners. They are taken on walks and visit places of interest around the local community.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children are making some progress in their learning and development in readiness for the next stage of their learning, including pre-school and school. However, children are not always effectively supported to make the best possible progress. Learning is sometimes incidental rather than purposely planned for. Even so, children are happy to try new experiences. They independently select resources and are encouraged to help to tidy away the toys.
