Previous inspection: Requires Improvement

p.1

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not always maintain an accurate record of children's attendance whilst they are in her setting.  The childminder does not gain enough information from parents about what their children already know and can do when they first join the setting. As a result, children's starting points are not identified precisely. In addition, she does not carry out regular robust observations to assess children's progress accurately and to plan for their future learning.  The childminder has not put enough emphasis on her professional development in order to strengthen her teaching skills further and deepen her understanding of the early years foundation stage.  The childminder's self-evaluation is not robust enough to make sure that all areas in need of improvement are swiftly identified and addressed.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder provides a nurturing and homely environment. She is caring and affectionate and knows children well. She is attentive to their care needs and routines and children demonstrate that they feel safe and secure in her company. Children's emotional well-being is promoted well.  Children's behaviour is good because there are clear expectations and boundaries in place. The childminder is a good role model and helps children to learn to share, take turns and treat others with respect.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 maintain an accurate record of children's attendance 08/07/2016  put in place effective arrangements to assess the starting points for children's learning, including making good use of what parents know about their child's achievements, and use this information and regular assessments of children's progress to plan experiences that accurately reflect children's individual learning needs 31/07/2016

p.2

Due Date

 focus professional development on gaining the training, skills and knowledge needed to improve the quality of teaching to a consistently good standard. 31/07/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 strengthen the arrangements for self-evaluation so that areas in need of further development are more swiftly identified and addressed.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed teaching activities and the impact these have on children's learning.  The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector looked at a sample of procedures and children's records and discussed the childminder's self-evaluation.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder's self-evaluation is not robust enough to help her to quickly identify weaknesses in her practice. For example, some required documentation is not consistently maintained. Since the last inspection the childminder has made some significant improvements, such as developing further partnerships with other settings. She has worked with other childminders to develop some of her systems to monitor children's progress. However, she has not focused her professional development sufficiently on improving her teaching and assessments so all children consistently benefit from good quality interactions and opportunities to learn. As a result, children are not supported well enough to make consistently good progress in their learning. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder understands her responsibilities to protect children from harm and how to report any concerns.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder obtains some information from parents about their children's likes and dislikes. She subsequently carries out some observations and records what she sees and hears. However, observations are not completed regularly enough and parents are not always encouraged to share their views about what their child can do. Consequently, the childminder does not have an accurate assessment of children's starting points to inform her planning for their future learning. Children have opportunities to make independent choices in their play. The childminder interacts well with them. For example, she intuitively recognises the meanings behind gestures and attempts at verbal communication from younger children. Two-year-old children develop their problem-solving skills as they learn to match shapes. They learn to count, recognise colours and to tell others about their experiences at home. Children willingly join in with activities and enjoy their learning

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not keep an accurate record of attendance as required. The days and times that children are present is not always clear. The childminder shares information with parents about their child's day. This reassures parents about the care their child receives. Children demonstrate their emotional attachment to the childminder and other children. They play well together relative to their age and stages of development. Children have opportunities to play in the garden and the childminder take them to visit the local community groups. These opportunities help children to develop their social skills and to be physically active. The childminder encourages parents to provide healthy options in their lunchboxes and children are provided with healthy snacks.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

The childminder's teaching requires improvement in order to ensure children make good progress. However, children are gaining some skills they need for the next stage in their learning and the eventual move to school. Children are emotionally secure and show developing confidence and an eagerness to learn. They can make independent choices in their play and are learning to develop useful skills, such as tidying up.
