This provision is good

 The childminder communicates very well with the children. She engages them in play and extends their learning, particularly in their listening and language development.  Children settle well under the childminder's attentive care. They build strong bonds with her which help them to feel secure and to develop good levels of emotional well-being.  The childminder observes children's play to assess their development. She uses this information and the children's interests to plan for their future learning and to enable them to make good progress.  The childminder has very strong partnerships with parents and other settings that the children attend. She has good communication with parents to keep them fully informed of children's care routines.  The childminder has a good understanding of how to keep children safe. She can identify indicators that would raise concerns and knows how to make a referral to help

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always ensure activities fully engage children, and support their curiosity, age and stage of development.  Children do not always have enough opportunity to develop their awareness of the world around them through, for example, the exploration and investigation of different materials and resources.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 ensure activities challenge and engage children and support their next steps in learning  build on opportunities for children to extend their awareness of the world around them, for example through experiences and exploration of different textures and materials.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector completed observations of the children engaged in activities indoors and outdoors with the childminder.  The inspector sampled some of the documents that the childminder uses to support her practice.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder at convenient times during the inspection.  The inspector took account of parents' views through written feedback.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibility to protect children and to keep them safe. For example, she continually checks her home and garden where the children play to ensure that it is safe. The childminder keeps up to date with current legislation. For example, she works with other professionals and reviews her knowledge to improve her skills and the experiences she provides for children. The childminder evaluates her practice well and makes improvements. She also includes the views of parents and children, to further develop the service she provides for them.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides a good range of activities that encourage children's individual learning needs. She has effective monitoring systems in place to help her identify gaps in children's learning and to inform her planning. She uses what she learns to plan activities and support children's next steps in learning. For example, children enjoy playing with the home-corner equipment. The childminder joins in with activities to extend children's learning. For instance, as children are engaged in watching the bin men, the childminder talks about the colours and counts with the children. They gain independence and learn to manage everyday tasks for themselves.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides the children with a caring and homely environment. She takes very good care of children's well-being and children form strong relationships with her. The childminder promotes children's physical and emotional development exceptionally well. Care routines are carried out hygienically and sensitively, to support children's needs. The childminder encourages healthy eating and exercise, to help children develop a good awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The childminder provides a positive environment that encourages children to use good manners. For example, even young children use words, such as 'please' and 'thank you', without prompting.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points. They gain useful skills through a variety of activities that extend their knowledge in all areas of learning. Children enjoy acquiring new words and mathematical language while sharing activities with the childminder. They are well-prepared for the next stage in their learning. Children benefit from a warm and nurturing environment where they show that they feel confident enough to explore and play.
