This provision is good

 The childminder is skilled at interacting with children and extending their learning. Children make good progress in relation to their starting points.  The childminder supports children's personal, social and emotional development well, which helps children develop confidence and self-esteem. Children behave well and are comfortable in the childminder's home.  The childminder forms strong partnerships with parents. There is a good two-way exchange of information about children's welfare and achievements, which contributes to consistency in children's care and learning  The childminder shares her policies and procedures with parents, to help provide them with knowledge about her role and responsibilities.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always gather information about what children already know and can do when they first start, to plan as effectively as possible from the outset.  The childminder does not always use her self-evaluation as effectively as possible to set and prioritise highly focused targets for improvement.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 gather more information from parents about what their children already know and can do when they start, to help plan for their learning needs as effectively as possible from the very beginning  use self-evaluation more effectively to set and prioritise highly focused targets for improvement, to help achieve even better outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke to the childminder and the children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with the children.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including policies, procedures and children's records.  The inspector conducted a tour of the premises that the childminder uses for childminding purposes.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities to safeguard children. She is aware of the signs and symptoms that may give cause for concern and knows where to report any concerns about children's well-being, should the need arise. There are also clear attendance records, accident and medication records. This fully supports children's personal development and welfare. Children are well supervised and the childminder understands the importance of keeping children safe and secure in her care. She makes risk assessments of her premises and ensures the environment is safe for children to play in. The childminder keeps up to date with changes in legislation and improves her knowledge through, for example, sharing information about best practice with other childminders and by visiting various childcare websites.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder effectively observes and assess children's learning and development, which helps her to know children's capabilities well. She plans a good range of activities indoors and outside that children enjoy and which matches their interests. The childminder supports younger children's early language skills well. For example, she talks to children about what they are doing and allows them plenty of time to think and respond to her questions and comments. The childminder also encourages other essential skills, such as early reading and writing. For instance, children enjoy using chalks to draw on the garden paving stones and they enjoy listening to stories while sitting on the childminder's lap.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is attentive to children and effectively meets their individual needs. She provides a child-friendly, warm and welcoming environment. Children are motivated to learn and they are confident. They have a good awareness of safety and behave in safe ways. For instance, the childminder teaches younger children how to climb up and down the decking step. Children are encouraged to develop healthy habits, such as healthy eating, and daily outdoor play and exercise help them to develop their physical skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Overall, children make good progress in their learning and development. They have ample opportunities to make choices and lead their own learning, aiding their independence. Young children are motivated and excited to take part in daily routines and activities. They enjoy doing things for themselves, including feeding themselves at lunch times. Children are ready for the next stages of their learning and move on to school.
