This provision is good
The childminder has high expectations of children. She plans a range of activities which challenges children appropriately. Children make good progress from their starting points. The childminder is a good role model for children. She encourages sharing and taking turns, and teaches children the importance of good hygiene. Children's behaviour is good and they play well together. The childminder has good partnerships with parents. She gains information from them and uses it well to help their children settle and to inform her planning. The childminder engages parents in their children's learning. For example, she shares all assessments with them and asks for their input. The childminder continuously improves her practice. For example, since her last inspection, the childminder has developed her observation and assessment methods, and focused more on children's next learning steps. This has helped improve outcomes

for children and helped raise her service to a good standard.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not make the best possible use of chances to support children's early literacy and their pre-reading skills in particular. The childminder misses opportunities to promote children's knowledge of how to eat healthily as part of a healthy lifestyle.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

take every opportunity to promote the use of print to further strengthen children's understanding that print carries meaning take every opportunity to promote children's knowledge and understanding of healthy eating.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector viewed activities and the childminder's interactions with children in the indoor and outdoor environments. The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector read a range of documentation, including improvement plans, planning documents and policies. The inspector read children's development records and tracked their progress. The inspector took account of parents' views through written correspondence.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is confident in her knowledge of the local child protection procedures and is aware of the importance of keeping up to date. The childminder carries out thorough risk assessments and daily checks of her home to ensure that it is safe for children's use. She develops children's knowledge of safety. For example, she carries out regular fire drills with them and teaches children how to use knives safely. The childminder has developed her teaching knowledge. For example, she has researched online publications and completed training courses, and is now more confident in engaging parents. The childminder monitors children's progress regularly and is fully aware of their stages of development. The childminder works with parents to identify further next learning steps for their children. This provides a consistent approach to children's ongoing learning.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder follows the children's lead in play and encourages them to make independent decisions. The childminder is enthusiastic, and skilfully incorporates learning and extension into children's play, such as through asking questions. For example, when children built towers from wooden blocks, the childminder supported their efforts while asking them to recognise colours and different shapes. The childminder encourages children's individual interests, such as in insects and other creatures, which the childminder uses as an opportunity to cover other areas of learning effectively.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are happy and well settled in the childminder's home. They have strong bonds with the childminder and regularly seek her out to be part of their play or for support if needed. Children are kind and caring towards others, and include each other in their play. The childminder encourages children's independence well. For example, they wash their hands before eating and have a go at putting their shoes on to go outside. Children enjoy daily opportunities for fresh air and interesting outdoor experiences. They exercise and develop their physical skills effectively. For example, they use local parks and woodland, and a large communal area where they play running games, explore sand and enjoy role play.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children enjoy learning and are enthusiastic when taking part in games and activities. They have the confidence to have a go and try. They learn to manage their personal needs. Children gain early mathematical skills; for example, they learn to count. Children develop skills that will prepare them well for the next stage of learning and move to school.
