They make

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not meticulously plan activities to give children the very best chance to build on their existing skills and rapidly achieve their next steps in learning.  The childminder does not collect information from parents about what children know and can already do when they first start. Therefore, assessments of children's progress are not always accurate or precise enough to enable her to plan appropriate activities to support children's learning from the outset.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance the planning to ensure that activities are even more fully tailored to children's individual learning needs and abilities so that they make more rapid progress  obtain information from parents when they first start about what their child already knows and can do, and use this information to assess children's starting points and plan more accurately from the outset.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at written feedback and spoke to parents on the day of the inspection and took account of their views.  The inspector viewed the areas of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including children's learning records, the childminder's self-evaluation, policies and procedures and suitability records for the childminder and her assistant.  The inspector spoke with the childminder, assistant and children at convenient times during the inspection.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant clearly understand the signs that could indicate a child is at risk of harm. They have a good understanding of the procedures to follow if they have concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder supervises the work of her assistant to ensure children receive a consistent, high-quality service. She monitors the quality of teaching and learning, and the progress children make. Therefore, gaps in learning are quickly identified and planned for. The childminder works well with parents and other settings that children attend to ensure that they receive continuity in their learning and make good progress. She also works with other childminders to share best practice. The childminder demonstrates a commitment to improving her knowledge. She is eager to complete further training that will have a positive impact on the learning opportunities she offers children. The childminder and her

assistant have worked hard to address the weaknesses identified at the last inspection.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is well qualified and experienced. Children experience good quality interactions that extend their understanding and promote their development with the childminder and her assistant. The quality of teaching is good. For example, the childminder effectively supports children's communication and social skills. She maintains an ongoing dialogue with the children. The childminder and her assistant make observations of children's play and they track children's achievements to ensure that they are making good progress. Children enjoy building towers using a crane. Early mathematics skills are promoted as children are encouraged to count how tall their towers are. Children work together supporting each other to complete puzzles. They enjoy singing and doing the actions to their favourite songs.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children show high levels of independence in their dressing and personal care, and they follow robust hygiene procedures. The childminder promotes healthy lifestyles well, for example, by providing nutritious food and plenty of opportunities for children to have fresh air and exercise. Children regularly visit playgroups where they learn to socialise with others. They enjoy tram rides into the city and celebrate various festivals throughout the year to extend their knowledge of the wider world. Their favourite outing is to the train station where they see all the different trains and they count how many they see.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children's early reading and writing skills are emerging. For example, children enjoy books and use visual aids to tell their favourite story. Children choose from a wide range of easily accessible toys and resources. They are learning to be independent. Children tidy toys away when they have finished playing with them. They are well prepared for the next stage in their learning.
