This provision is good
The childminder effectively targets areas for development along with his co-childminder. For example, they have recently streamlined their observation and assessment system to make it more effective for them. This helps them in identifying gaps in learning and helps them to close these gaps even more swiftly. The childminder has a good understanding of children's individual progress and knows them all very well. For example, he is fully aware of children's identified next steps in learning and uses this information during activities to support their development. Children behave well and have good relationships with each other, the childminder and his co-childminder. Children listen to the childminder and are able to carry out simple instructions. They include him in their play and show that they feel safe and secure. Children thoroughly enjoy creative activities and the childminder effectively interacts

with them to help support their learning. For example, he prompts discussions about the paint colours they use and enables them to identify them correctly.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always enable children to choose what they would like to play with from the full range of resources available. This does not fully enable children to take the lead and follow their chosen play experiences. The childminder does not always fully support older children's awareness of letters and their sounds to help them spell words and further support their early literacy skills.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities in the indoor environment and the childminder's interactions with children. The inspector sampled a wide range of policies, procedures and records, including those linked to suitability. The inspector took parents' views into account. The inspector sampled children's development records and tracked their progress. The inspector spoke to the childminder and interacted with the children at appropriate times during the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of child protection policies and procedures, and minimises risks to children within the environments they use. He has good partnerships with parents and others involved in children's care. For example, he effectively encourages parents and key persons to share ongoing information about children's development to help them assess and plan for children's needs together. This helps support consistency in children's care and learning. The childminder fully values parents' views on the quality of service he provides and seeks their opinions regularly. He uses this information to help him evaluate his practice and improve the outcomes for children. The childminder undertakes training, such as online research and attending conferences, to help further improve his skills and knowledge.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder plans stimulating and challenging activities for children, based on their interests and next steps in learning. The childminder skilfully poses questions to children to help prompt their thinking. For example, during story time the childminder asks children to guess what would happen next in the story and links the picture of an aeroplane to the children going on holiday. The childminder effectively maintains children's interest. For example, he extends a conversation about sea creatures by talking about seahorses. This re-energises the discussion about why sea creatures cannot live in the garden pond. This helps effectively promote children's understanding of the world.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children enjoy using the garden where they use ride-on toys and help with tending and harvesting the fruit and vegetables. This helps to support children's physical skills and also their awareness of where food comes from. The childminder is adept at helping children to learn to manage risks in the environment from a young age. For example, he encourages children to try things for themselves, such as learning what will happen if they try to pull a book from the bottom of the pile. Children have a good awareness of the daily routines. For example, young children understand which shoes belong to which child and readily help find these for their friends when their parents arrive.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are able to concentrate for a long period of time, which helps support their learning and skills well. For example, they take their time to work out how to use the magnetic shapes and persist at tidying away resources. Older children show a keen interest in mathematics and are motivated to devise and complete calculations and undertake their homework. Children make good progress in their development from their starting points and are prepared well for their next stage in learning.
