This provision is good

 Staff work well with parents and other professionals. For instance, they keep parents well informed of children's progress and provide good ideas to support their learning at home.  Staff are supervised well and receive good support and training. For example, staff attended a course on helping children to develop their mathematical skills, which led to improvements in teaching.  Staff manage children's behaviour effectively. For instance, they set understandable rules around behaviour and children are clear about staff expectations. Staff also use praise successfully to motivate children to behave in positive ways.  Staff plan well to meet the needs of children. They observe children regularly and use this information to understand how to target their teaching. Children make good progress.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, younger children are not fully challenged during some group experiences.  Opportunities for children to explore and investigate are not fully developed for those who learn best outdoors.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve the organisation of some group experiences to develop further challenges for younger children  develop further opportunities for children to explore, experiment and investigate in the outdoor area, to support children who learn best outdoors.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager of a group activity.  The inspector observed the interaction between staff and children, and interacted with children.  The inspector tracked the progress of several children.  The inspector checked a sample of documentation and held a discussion with the manager.  The inspector spoke to staff, parents and children, and considered their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. Staff are aware of the signs and symptoms to look out for and are clear about the procedures to follow should they be concerned about a child's welfare. The manager helps to ensure children's safety. For example, she carries out regular checks covering all areas of the nursery. The manager conducts thorough background checks on staff to assess their suitability. This helps to keep children safe. Monitoring is effective. For instance, the manager works alongside staff and has a direct insight into the quality of teaching. She observes them as they work and provides feedback to improve practice. The manager also checks planning and assessment regularly to help identify and tackle any gaps in learning. The manager reflects on all aspects of the nursery and has set clear goals to build ongoing improvements.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff support children's early literacy skills well. For instance, they teach children to recognise their written names. Staff make the most of opportunities to encourage children's early mathematical skills. They teach children to count objects and to sort them into groups. Children learn to share and take turns as they play with toys. Staff support children's creative skills well. They provide opportunities for children to use a wide range of different textures, materials and tools to create their own art. Staff support children's language skills effectively. For example, while children play with dough, staff use interesting words to describe processes, such as 'pinching', 'kneading' and 'rolling'. Staff provide good opportunities for children to practise a variety of physical skills, such as climbing, throwing, catching and balancing.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children settle well and have good relationships with staff and other children. Staff get to know children well and value them as individuals, which helps to build their confidence. Children are motivated to learn. They have good levels of independence. For instance, they serve themselves at snack times and put on outer clothing. Staff teach children how to behave in safe ways. For example, they teach children about road safety and provide explanations of the dangers of throwing sand. Children have good personal care skills and learn healthy routines. They use the bathroom independently, enjoy nutritious snacks and benefit from daily physical exercise.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and have fun as they take part in activities such as action songs and learning names of body parts. Children enjoy browsing through books and make comments about their favourite characters. They learn valuable skills for their future learning in school.
