Inspection activities
The inspector spoke to the childminder, her assistant and the children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with the children. The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including policies, procedures, and children's records. The inspector toured the areas that the childminder uses for childminding purposes. The inspector took account of the written views of parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant have a clear understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures, including what to do in the event of a concern regarding children's welfare. The childminder ensures that everyone living and working in her home is suitable. She provides appropriate support for her assistant to understand his role and responsibilities. She has the necessary skills to support children's care and learning effectively. The childminder has effective systems in place to monitor practice and the progress that children make in their development. For example, she completes good observations of children's progress across all areas of learning. She regularly reviews her observations, to plan meaningful next steps in children's learning. The childminder continually reflects on her practice and provision, helping to enhance children's experiences further. For example, she has identified her garden as an area she would like

to develop to provide more challenges for children who like playing outside. Parents comment that their children are happy with the childminder.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder supports children effectively in their play. She is very proactive in supporting their communication and language abilities. The childminder skilfully and positively interacts with children and introduces new words to extend their language skills. For example, she uses words such as 'small', 'smaller' and 'enough', and gives clear explanations to help improve their understanding. The childminder supports children's mathematical development well. She encourages children to count for a purpose and offers a good range of resources to help children become familiar with numbers, shapes and space. Children enjoy using different materials and textures that help them explore.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The children play in a well-resourced and welcoming space. They move confidently and safely around the environment as they play. Children are confident, interested and motivated to explore. They develop good imaginations; for example, as they sit on chairs and pretend they are in aeroplanes. Children understand about keeping safe and show this in their play. For instance, they remind the childminder to put their safety belts on as they play in their pretend aeroplanes. The childminder teaches children to walk around with tools safely. Children behave well. They understand to be kind, polite and helpful.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their starting points. They are motivated to learn and well prepared for the future and their move to school. Children visit a range of local community groups on a weekly basis, where they socialise with a wider set of friends. Children develop good concentration skills as they persevere with their activities.
