This provision is good

 The childminder uses mathematical language well to help children develop their awareness of different mathematical ideas and concepts.  Children make good progress in relation to their starting points. The childminder frequently tracks children's changing interests and development needs to help her plan challenging experiences that prepare children well for their next stages in learning.  Children behave well. The childminder provides consistent reminders so they learn to share and interact well. This securely prepares children for different social occasions as they learn to adapt their behaviour when with others.  The childminder forms effective partnerships with parents. They work well together to support children's emotional and physical development.  The childminder understands her practice well and regularly reflects on her service. This helps her to make improvements that meet children's changing needs, such as

activity ideas. She obtains parents' views during this process, to include their needs and suggestions.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not extend opportunities for children to build on their literacy skills and knowledge about the natural world, especially for those who prefer to learn outdoors.  The childminder does not always help children effectively to be more independent.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend children's literacy interests and opportunities to learn about nature and living things, especially those children who prefer to learn outdoors  support children to become more independent and do things for themselves.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children playing indoors and in the garden.  The inspector spoke to children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder about how she manages and organises her practice and supports children's learning.  The inspector sampled a range of documents including children's development records and policies.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder confidently identifies signs and knows what to do if she has concerns about children's welfare. She keeps her knowledge of child protection up to date and has relevant telephone numbers for other professionals at hand so she can report her concerns promptly. The childminder attends a variety of training courses that help to keep her teaching skills up to date; for example, managing children's challenging behaviour. The childminder forms effective partnerships with parents. They work well to support children's development and set targets together that help children to progress. Self-evaluation is strong. The childminder reflects on her practice effectively to identify her strengths and areas for further development. This helps her to continually adapt her educational programmes as children progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of teaching is strong. The childminder interacts effectively to challenge and support children's good progress. She monitors children's progress regularly and plans activities based on her observations of their interests and learning needs. For example, she provides water activities that include sponges, having observed how well children concentrate and watch the water flow out when squeezed. Children build strong muscles in their hands and develop good hand-to-eye coordination, preparing them well for more controlled activities, such as handwriting. The childminder supports children well to communicate confidently. For example, when she speaks to children, she allows time for them to respond and uses sign language to support their communication.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children feel secure from the close attachments they form with the childminder. The childminder provides them with frequent cuddles and reassurance, such as when they become tired. The childminder constantly praises children's achievements, such as when they manage to use a water spray, which helps to build their good self-esteem. This encourages children and motivates them to learn and persevere. The childminder supports good health and hygiene successfully. Children enjoy eating healthy and nutritious meals and snacks, which the childminder freshly prepares.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children enjoy a good range of activities. They enjoy outings to a variety of places and mix with other children. They develop good social skills and confidence in new surroundings. Children have good spaces and opportunities to be physically active and practise new skills. They learn to count and explore new ideas. Children gain the key skills needed for their eventual move to school.
