This provision is good

 The childminder gets to know children's interests and stages of development well. She makes good use of observation and assessment to plan challenging activities.  The childminder is skilled at interacting with children and extending their learning. Children make good progress in their learning.  Children develop a strong understanding of the importance of healthy lifestyles. For example, they enjoy healthy diets and plenty of exercise outdoors.  The childminder is very reflective and evaluates her childcare provision effectively. She is proactive in addressing areas she identifies as needing development, so that children benefit from the ongoing improvement of her already good practice.  The childminder forms strong partnerships with parents. There is a good two-way exchange of information about children's welfare and achievements, which contributes to consistency in children's care and learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not fully developed opportunities for children to increase their interest in the natural world, to take this aspect of their learning to a higher level.  The childminder does not consistently encourage children to choose their toys and build on their own ideas, to fully promote their independence.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase opportunities for children to extend their interest and knowledge of the natural world, to further develop their understanding  build on ways in which children can strengthen their already good skills in making choices and developing their play, to further encourage their independence.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's activities indoors and in the garden.  The inspector sampled children's learning records and other relevant documentation.  The inspector discussed childcare practices with the childminder.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from their written feedback.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has recently completed safeguarding training and is up to date in her awareness of how to help protect children from harm. She is skilled at assessing and reducing risks to enable children to move around safely. Since the last inspection, the childminder has taken a long career break. However, she has been taking positive steps to improve and update her knowledge and skills. For example, she has made good use of recent learning to improve her assessment systems so they more clearly reflect what children can do. The childminder monitors and evaluates her planning and assessments of children's progress effectively. She uses this information well to make sure she tailors activities to meet children's changing learning needs.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Overall, the childminder provides a wide range of activities and learning experiences that children enjoy. She has a good understanding of how children learn and how to build on their skills. For example, she helps children develop strong communication skills by repeating and reinforcing words. Young children quickly learn new words and start to join sounds and words together. For example, they say, 'choo-choo train' when they hear a train going past. The childminder shows children what they can do next, to help develop their play. Children enjoy imitating the childminder and learning new skills. For example, they find out how to use a variety of tools to make different marks in sand.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder creates a safe and homely environment where children feel secure and settled. Children form strong emotional bonds with the childminder. Young children play amicably alongside their friends. When any minor disputes occur, the childminder deals sensitively and gently with children. She clearly reinforces children's understanding of the need to be kind to others. She teaches children to value and respect differences between people in the community. Children develop a good awareness of how to stay safe and manage risks. For example, young children learn how to negotiate the steps safely when going into the garden. They develop good coordination and strong physical skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in the skills they need to move successfully on to school. They develop strong social skills and become increasingly confident. Children manage their own personal needs. They are motivated and concentrate well. They are willing learners who enjoy exploring and investigating. They like to have a go at new tasks and work things out for themselves.
