This provision is good

 The childminder is clear about her role in safeguarding children. She is well aware of the action to take and who to contact should she have any concerns about children's welfare.  The childminder builds effective relationships with parents. For example, she shares valuable information with them to support children's development and learning at home.  The childminder provides the children with an exciting range of activities, which support them to make good progress in their learning.  The childminder makes strong use of repetition and gestures alongside spoken language to support children's understanding. This aids children's communication and language development.  Children benefit from daily opportunities to exercise and explore the outdoors to support their physical development.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always provide children with a wide range of writing materials to support them to give meaning to marks they make.  The childminder has limited resources to help young children develop an awareness of diversity in the wider community.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 review the environment and extend resources to enable children to practise their early writing skills  provide a wider range of resources that promote children's understanding and respect of other people, cultures and backgrounds, to fully extend their understanding of the world around them.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector sampled some safeguarding policies and procedures, and risk assessment records.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector discussed with the childminder her plans for the future and how she works with her co-childminder.  The inspector read letters of reference to take into account parents' views on the services they receive.  The inspector observed the children participating in activities and interacting with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of how to identify potential hazards to children. She carries out thorough risk assessments to keep the environment safe and teaches children how to identify risks and keep themselves safe. The childminder constantly reflects on her practice and works closely with her co- childminder to ensure that the service she provides meets the needs of the children and families. The childminder is a good role model. She has clear rules and boundaries, and helps to support children to learn how to take turns and share. The childminder has secure partnerships with other professionals to support her practice as well as improve outcomes for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good awareness of how children learn and effective systems are in place for observation and assessment. She plans an exciting range of experiences to help children progress. She makes good use of the children's emerging interests and stages of development to support and extend their learning. The childminder makes good use of skilful questions to introduce mathematical language into children's play, such as encouraging them to compare the different sizes of twigs in the garden. Children particularly enjoy reading a variety of stories with the childminder who encourages them to be actively involved in the event. For instance children turn the pages of the book in search of the baby penguins. Children show good levels of concentration and are motivated to learn.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children have a stimulating environment in which to play, where they can spread out to investigate the toys and resources on offer. Children form strong emotional attachments with the childminder. They eagerly explore the environment, knowing that an adult is close at hand for a cuddle or assistance if needed. The childminder furthers children's well-being through good hygiene routines and well-balanced diets. She encourages children to carry out tasks for themselves. For instance, at snack time children peel their fruit. Children benefit from trips to parks and a local allotment where they develop a good awareness of their community and learn about the natural world.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in relation to their starting points. They are settled and display a strong sense of belonging. For example, they eagerly choose which book they would like to read next. Children gain the skills they need for the next stage in their learning and are well prepared for their future.
