This provision is good

 The childminder works well in partnership with parents. She shares their children's achievements and together they agree on how to help children to develop. Children make good progress in their learning.  Children develop very good language skills and are confident communicators.  The childminder helps children to understand some simple house rules and right from wrong. They learn to cooperate with each other and to share and take turns.  Children have very warm and trusting relationships with the childminder. She knows their individual needs; for example, how best to settle them to sleep with favourite toys and comforters.  The childminder updates her knowledge in a variety of ways to improve her teaching skills. Children benefit from new activities that make learning enjoyable.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasion, the childminder does not monitor children's achievements precisely enough to plan even more rigorously for their future development.  The childminder does not always help children learn how to manage simple hygiene routines themselves, such as washing and drying their hands.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 refine the monitoring of children's achievements to track their progress precisely and plan even more accurately for their next steps in learning  help children to understand the importance of good hygiene and to manage their basic personal needs independently.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector held discussions with the childminder.  The inspector observed activities and the childminder's interactions with the children.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's training, suitability checks and safeguarding knowledge.  The inspector discussed the childminder's self-evaluation with her.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder reflects well on her practice and has made good improvements since the last inspection. She is aware of what she must notify to Ofsted and provides parents with a written summary of their children's development when they are aged two years, as required. The childminder provides a good range of activities and experiences for children both in the home and out in the local community. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder completes ongoing visual assessments to identify and minimise hazards as one way of making sure that she keeps children safe. She has a good knowledge of the local procedures to follow if she has a concern for a child, to help protect their welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has good expectations of what each child can achieve. She knows the children well and plans activities that engage and interest them. For example, she builds on children's fascination with insects. She extends their knowledge by observing spiders and sharing information in books, such as how spiders spin webs to their catch food. The childminder teaches children early mathematical skills well. For instance, she encourages children to count the stacking cups that they are playing with and talks to them about putting the cups in size order, with the biggest at the bottom. The childminder supports children's love of music and songs. She encourages them to move rhythmically in response to music with actions and to sing the words.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children have close bonds with the childminder. She helps them to feel secure by listening and acknowledging their requests, such as to pick them up for a cuddle. The childminder supports children's choices and exploration. For example, she provides good-quality and easily available resources. The childminder encourages children to feed themselves with their spoons, and children learn how to use a knife safely to slice an apple. The childminder gives children opportunities to socialise, make friends and find out more about the wider community. Children enjoy visits to playgroups and take part in activities that help them to learn about and value each other's family customs.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are learning a variety of skills that provide them with a good foundation for future learning. They behave well and happily play alongside each other. Children learn early reading skills. They enjoy listening to stories and looking at favourite books. They hold the books the correct way up and turn pages carefully. Children count for a purpose, for example, to work out if a fruit bar has enough pieces for each of them to eat.
