This provision is good

The childminder helps children to learn the social, communication and physical skills they need to be ready for the next stage of learning.  The childminder has improved the overall quality of her provision since her last inspection. She has developed her relationships with parents and raised the quality of her teaching and assessment to good levels.  The childminder provides a warm and welcoming environment for children. They typically have access to a good range of resources to support their learning.  The childminder understands children's needs very well and uses this knowledge to build positive relationships with them. Children are confident and the childminder effectively nurtures their self-esteem. They relate well to others and behave well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder misses some occasions to build on children's creative and imaginative learning.  The childminder does not make the most of opportunities to improve children's concentration or listening skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 help develop children's imaginative abilities further to aid their creative learning  develop ways of increasing children's concentration and listening skills.

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with the childminder, children and parents at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector observed the children's interactions with others.  The inspector took account of the written views from parents.  The inspector viewed a range of documentation, including policies and procedures and children's records.  The inspector and the childminder evaluated a planned activity together.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has made improvements to her practice that have contributed towards better outcomes for children's learning. She reviews her practice and has successfully improved the quality of her teaching. The childminder continuously refreshes her knowledge and skills. For example, she has developed her assessments of children's learning after attending a training course. The childminder makes accurate assessments of children's development. She uses the information to gauge the rate of children's progress and identify any who may need extra help. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps her knowledge of local child protection procedures up to date and understands what to do if she is concerned for children's safety.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses effective teaching skills, such as questioning, explanation and encouragement during play. For example, as the children play in the water tray, she asks them about how the water feels and explains what the tools are for. Partnerships with parents are strong. The childminder asks parents about what their children can already do from the outset. In addition, she regularly shares information about how well their children are developing. Parents comment that the childminder is very supportive, well organised and nurturing. The childminder develops children's early communication, literacy and number skills well. She creates opportunities to develop their other skills further. For example, she provides challenging climbing equipment to encourage children to be active and develop their physical skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children behave well, play happily and respond well to praise and encouragement. The childminder is very caring and reassuring, giving younger children a secure base from which to explore the world around them. She helps children learn to manage their own care needs and build positive social skills with others. She encourages sharing and taking turns with toys, and acknowledging one another's feelings. The childminder uses a range of opportunities to teach children about the wider world and gain an understanding of others beyond their own experiences. She encourages healthy lifestyle choices, such as good eating habits and plenty of exercise.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress. They develop good communication skills. For example, young children talk to themselves and the childminder and follow her simple instructions as they play. Children develop early literacy skills, such as good pen control as they make marks on large sheets of paper. Children develop a sense of their place in the world. They talk about their loved ones as they play. Children are well prepared for their future learning.
