Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not use the information gathered from observations and assessments well enough to plan a wide range of activities which accurately supports the next steps in children's learning. Children make steady rather than good progress in readiness for school.  The childminder has not undertaken professional development to strengthen her knowledge of how to improve teaching and learning and deepen her understanding of the early years foundation stage.  The childminder has not obtained information about persons who hold parental responsibly for some children.  The childminder has not identified successful ways to share ongoing information with staff in other early years settings that children attend to promote continuity in their learning.  Systems for evaluation have yet to be fully developed, in order to provide an accurate reflection of the setting's strengths and weaknesses. Parents' and children's views are

not regularly gained to help identify all future priorities.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder sensitively supports children when they first start in her care. She has a warm and attentive approach. Children settle well, form positive bonds with her and are happy and secure.  Children know what is expected of them and behave well. The childminder is a good role model and children learn to share, take turns and treat others with respect.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 make better use of ongoing observations to plan more accurately for the next stage in children's learning, and ensure there is a good balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities which provides sufficient levels of challenge for individual children to help them make the best possible progress 31/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that appropriate training, skills and knowledge are maintained, in order to consistently provide good quality teaching and learning opportunities for all children 31/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

 make sure information is gained about persons who have parental responsibly for children. 30/06/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 develop further ways to successfully share information with staff from other early years settings where children attend to promote continuity in their learning  improve the process for continuous improvement by more accurately identifying and planning for all future priorities, and give parents and children more opportunities to share their views.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed teaching activities and the impact these have on children's learning.  The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector looked at a sample of procedures and children's records and discussed the childminder's self-evaluation.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector checked the evidence of suitability of all the household members and the childminder's qualifications.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder's systems of self-evaluation are not robust enough to accurately help her to identify the strengths and weaknesses in her practice. She evaluates what she feels she does well but does not focus specifically enough on setting targets that will drive her provision forward. She does not seek the views of parents or children to help her identify areas for improvement. The childminder completes the required mandatory training. However, professional development opportunities do not effectively focus on raising the quality of her teaching further. This does not support children to make good progress. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has attended safeguarding training and is aware of her responsibility to protect children from harm and report any concerns to the appropriate outside agencies. The childminder closely supervises children and takes positive measures to keep them safe.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder has a system in place for completing observations and assessments which helps to track children's development in the different age bands. However, this information is not used effectively to plan a wide range of enjoyable activities and experiences to fully support the next steps in children's learning. Most of the activities that the childminder provides are highly adult led and are not chosen by children. This does not allow children to initiate their own learning effectively. However, some learning does take place. For example, older children develop their knowledge of shapes, colours and numbers during sand play. They learn to use various tools correctly as they fill and empty a variety of containers. Younger children learn to follow instructions as they throw and catch a bean bag. The childminder praises children and this encourages them to repeat their actions. The childminder shares information about children's ongoing learning with

parents. However, partnerships with staff in other early years settings that children attend are not fully successful to promote continuity in their learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder has not gained information about the people who hold parental responsibility for some of the children in her care. This means that she is not aware of the people who have a right to make major decisions in the child's life. Children have built strong attachments with the childminder and other children, promoting their emotional well-being. Children enjoy healthy and nutritious snacks which include a selection of fruit. The childminder takes children on a wide variety of outings to local parks and groups. These outings help children to develop their social skills, be physically active and learn about the wider world.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Although, children are confident and eager to learn, they are not supported well enough to become highly successful learners. Weaknesses identified have an impact on the rate at which children make progress in their learning and development. However, some of the activities on offer do help children gain some of the skills they will need for their next stage in learning and their eventual move to school.
