This provision is good

 The childminder plans a variety of interesting activities and experiences for children, based on their ages and needs. Children make good progress in their learning and development, given what they know when they start. This helps to prepare them well for what they need to learn next.  The quality of teaching is good. The childminder speaks and listens to the children carefully, for example in conversations with them, to guide and develop their early language and communication skills. She checks their progress carefully.  The childminder is kind and caring. She effectively supports children to form a close bond and secure attachment with her. She provides a good foundation for children to develop emotionally and they behave well.  Children are safe and secure in the childminder's care. She assesses risks thoroughly on her premises and prior to taking children on outings.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always use self-evaluation routines effectively to identify areas to help strengthen her practice further.  The childminder misses some opportunities to build on children's curiosity and interest in the natural world.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 build on the use of self-evaluation to help improve practice to the highest level  use opportunities to develop children's learning and understanding of the natural world more effectively.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder with the children and spoke with the childminder about their learning.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection, regarding her practice and the arrangements for observation, assessment and planning.  The inspector checked the documentation the childminder uses to support her practice.  The inspector discussed her self-evaluation processes.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her role in protecting children should any welfare concerns arise. She takes care to update her knowledge of safeguarding so that she is aware of any changes to legislation. The childminder knows the children well and regularly checks on their progress. For example, she completes observations and written summaries of children's development to assess their learning and provide extra help to any who might need it. The childminder has a good understanding the early years requirements. For example, she meets with childminding support groups to help her keep up to date and exchange ideas. Links with parents are good.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children are happy and make choices about their play from the variety of resources available. They take part in a good range of activities that typically motivate and interest them effectively. For example, children choose to play outside and show increasing independence as they find their shoes and try to put them on. They develop good physical skills. For example, they play enthusiastically on the climbing frame where they learn to balance and climb carefully and learn to scoop and pour sand in the sand tray. The childminder encourages children's early mathematical skills well. For example, she counts with the children as they build towers of bricks and talks about the shapes and sizes.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are confident and clearly enjoy the childminder's warm interactions with them. She provides lots of praise and encouragement during activities and throughout the day, which helps to develop children's self-esteem and confidence. The childminder is a good example for children in how to treat others. For example, she is calm and gives children clear expectations to help them behave well. The childminder works closely with parents and lets them know about their children's day and their achievements. In addition, she encourages parents to share their learning experiences from home so she can plan activities that complement what they have learnt. The childminder provides many opportunities to help children adopt healthy lifestyles. For example, she encourages healthy eating and teaches children about good hygiene routines.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and develop the necessary early reading, writing and number skills ready to start school. Children enjoy playing and being physically active; for example, they have opportunities to be outside each day. They demonstrate good social skills and are developing their independence well.
