This provision is good

 The childminder has many years' experience delivering high-quality care and learning. She has a good understanding of the different ways children learn and how to support the progress they make in their learning. Outcomes for children are good.  Children are cared for in a welcoming, calming environment which is richly resourced to meet the educational needs of all ages of children.  Older children are good role models for the younger children. They play well together and older children share their skills and knowledge.  The childminder places a very strong emphasis on building and supporting children's emotional well-being. Very effective settling-in procedures help children become confident and settled in the childminder's care. They quickly build friendships with the other children.  Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder keeps parents informed about their child's day, including sending parents messages to confirm older children have

been collected from school.  Children of all ages have opportunities to learn about how to grow fruit, vegetables and herbs. This helps them develop an understanding of making healthy food choices.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always utilise the information she gathers through observation and assessments to help children reach higher levels of progress.  Although the childminder, generally, reviews and evaluates her practice and the service she offers, her evaluations lack sharply focused plans to help her drive her overall provision to the highest level.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has kept her early years foundation stage knowledge up to date and has adapted some of her working practices. This has helped her sustain the good level of care and learning she provides. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the possible indicators of abuse and how to respond to any concerns that are raised about children's welfare. The childminder has relevant qualifications, such as paediatric first aid. This helps her to provide an environment where children's safety and welfare is promoted well. The childminder works closely with parents to ensure they are happy with the service she provides. She meets with other early years professionals to share hints and tips.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports all children in their learning. She follows children's interests and provides a range of activities, both in her home and on outdoor adventures. These cover the seven areas of learning equally. Overall, the childminder observes children during play to establish the progress that is being made. Her positive interactions encourage even the youngest children to develop a thirst for learning new skills. They delight in experimenting and experiencing new things which help to drive their development forward. The childminder provides resources that offer age-appropriate challenge. Children show good perseverance as they learn how to master jigsaws. All children develop a love for books. They thoroughly enjoy snuggling up with the childminder as they share the stories and have some rest time. Children develop their communication and language skills and they repeat phrases from a well known story book. Older children have opportunities to extend

the learning taking place at school. They confidently write the letters of their names and use a range of mathematical language as they play at 'shops'.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a good role model. She is calm, caring and thoroughly enjoys helping children enjoy and achieve while in her care. Children have a strong ownership of the dedicated playroom. They have opportunities to select if they would like to play and learn indoors or outside in the garden. Outside, children have opportunities to build upon existing physical skills and learn new ones. Outdoor adventures provide children with a range of different activities, where learning takes place anywhere. They delight in visiting places where they can play with other children and taking walks in the park to feed the ducks. Children of all ages are well behaved. They are supported to learn about good manners and develop respect for each other.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop their independence skills. They enjoy directing their own play and making choices about how to use the range of resources on offer. Children demonstrate positive attitudes towards learning, which contributes to the good progress they make. Children are prepared well for their next stage in learning and, when the time comes, to move on to school. Furthermore, children who attend after school are given opportunities to relax after a busy day. They delight in sharing their tales of the school day.
