This provision is good

 The childminder has successfully addressed previous actions and recommendations since her last inspection. She ensures that children's hours of attendance are accurately recorded each day and displays her certificate of registration on the wall in the playroom.  The childminder provides an attractive, welcoming learning environment for children, with a broad range of stimulating activities to help them make good progress.  Children have lots of opportunities to follow their interests and lead their own learning. They confidently make choices about what they do. The childminder is highly responsive to their ideas, requests and individual needs.  Children settle well and build secure bonds with the childminder. They have good relationships with her and demonstrate that they feel safe and happy in her care.  The childminder is nurturing, calm and reassuring in her manner. She acts as a good role model for children and gently reminds them of her expectations for their behaviour.

p.1

This provision is good

She helps them to behave well and teaches them to share, take turns and be polite and respectful towards others.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Even though the childminder builds good relationships with parents and encourages a two-way flow of information about children's care and learning, she does not consistently share precise details about their stages of development and progress.  Although the childminder has established strong partnerships with some settings that children also attend, she has not developed equally effective links with all other provisions. Information is not shared well enough with some settings to ensure that children's learning and development needs are met exceptionally well.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 share more precise details with parents about children's stages of development and ongoing progress  strengthen arrangements for working in partnership with all settings that children attend, using shared information to promote a highly collaborative approach to children's care and learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed all areas of the home that are used for childminding.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder, and spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures and the childminder's self-evaluation form.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's training and of the suitability of people living on the premises.  The inspector took account of the views of parents, as expressed in their written comments on questionnaires provided by the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is aware of signs or symptoms that would raise concerns about a child's welfare and knows the procedures to follow in the event of a concern. She carries out regular risk assessments in order to help keep children safe in her care. The childminder attends relevant training to develop and update her knowledge and inform her practices. She evaluates her provision to identify strengths and areas for development. She seeks parents' views and uses their feedback to help her improve her service. She makes good use of an improvement plan to identify and implement changes, successfully improving the quality of provision for the benefit of children who attend.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how children develop and learn. She uses her observations and assessments of children to identify areas of learning to focus on with them next. She interacts effectively with children and extends their vocabulary. Children have good opportunities for sensory play. For example, they become engrossed as they explore the texture of paint on their hands and watch what happens as the colours mix together. They are fascinated by the marks they make with their hands, fingers and brushes, using the paint. They investigate objects made from different materials, such as, metal, wood and sponge, and delight in the different sounds they make as they bang, shake and tap a selection of musical instruments. The childminder skilfully weaves in opportunities to promote children's early mathematical development during activities and daily routines. She encourages children to count, for instance, counting out pieces of

cereal into their bowl at snack time and models mathematical language to talk about size, shape and quantity.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides children with plenty of opportunities to develop their social skills and confidence, in a variety of situations. She takes them to playgroups and they sometimes meet with other childminders and their minded children. They frequently go out into the local community and visit the library, shops and nearby parks. These opportunities help to broaden and enrich children's experiences. Children's good health is successfully promoted. They get plenty of fresh air and exercise each day and benefit from a choice of healthy snacks. They begin to develop independence in managing their personal care needs, relative to their ages.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop key skills that they need for the next stage in their learning and are prepared well for their eventual move on to school. They explore and investigate and demonstrate a positive attitude to learning. They enjoy listening to and joining in with stories, songs and rhymes and make marks using a variety of materials. Older children begin to write their names. All children are working comfortably within the typical range of development for their age and are making good progress in relation to their starting points.
