to set targets for continuous improvement.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 There are fewer opportunities for children to access mark-making materials.  The childminder misses some opportunities to support children's mathematical development by introducing numbers into their play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 develop further opportunities for children to access a range of mark-making materials  provide more activities that introduce numbers into children's play.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder with the children.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector sampled documentation, including policies, qualification certificates and children's records.  The inspector discussed the childminder's self-evaluation with her.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge and understanding of the steps she must take if she is concerned about a child's welfare. She carries out daily risk assessments to ensure children are safe at all times. The childminder keeps her knowledge up to date and attends additional training, which helps to improve outcomes for children. She has strong partnerships with other childminders and shares good practice and her knowledge. The childminder is dedicated to providing a high-quality provision for children and their parents. She maintains a good overview of the activities and experiences she provides for children. This ensures they reflect their ongoing interests and stages of development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's early language skills well. For example, she successfully models language and encourages children to repeat simple words and phrases. Children have opportunities to take part in rhymes and singing sessions and experiment with the sounds made by different words. The childminder develops children's understanding and listening skills, for example, as they respond to instructions. The childminder uses her observations of children's learning to identify the next steps in their learning and she regularly monitors their progress.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children show confidence and are motivated to learn. They know where to find resources and build good relationships with other minded children, sharing toys well. Children's behaviour is good. The childminder helps them to understand boundaries and expectations within her home. She provides gentle reminders about routines, such as tidy-up time, and helps children to understand the rationale behind this. Children have good opportunities to develop their social skills. For example, they learn to mix with larger groups of children at playgroups. The childminder gathers good-quality information from parents when children first start attending. This supports children's emotional and physical well-being in an effective way.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress, relative to their starting points. They are confident, sociable and enthusiastic individuals who are eager to explore and try things for themselves. For example, they turn the pages when looking at books independently and also learn to use push-buttons toys, laughing when they get them to make sounds. Children develop the necessary skills and display positive attitudes for the next steps in their learning, and are well prepared for their move on to school.
