This provision is good

 Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder understands the important role that parents play in the development of their children. Parents appreciate the comprehensive information they receive about their children's learning and development.  Children show that they feel safe and secure. They are confident and have strong emotional attachments to the childminder.  The childminder makes good use of opportunities to update her knowledge, to improve her practice and to raise outcomes for the children to a good level.  The premises are safe, secure and hygienic. The childminder provides children with a nutritious diet to support their physical well-being.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not take all opportunities to enable children to understand that print has meaning, ready for their future learning.  The childminder does not provide children with consistent opportunities to learn about different cultures and festivals, to fully develop their awareness of diversity.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enable young children to understand that print carries meaning, to help develop their pre-reading skills  provide children with a wider range of opportunities to learn about different cultures and festivals, to further encourage their awareness of diversity.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder interacting with children inside and outside.  The inspector read documents relating to the safeguarding of children.  The inspector read the childminder's self-evaluation documents and records relating to the children's progress, and checked how children's interests are used to plan activities.  The inspector read the comments made by parents and took account of their views.  The inspector spoke to the childminder about her practice at various times throughout the visit.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder is ambitious and has high expectations. She uses her self-evaluation to improve her practice and seeks the views of parents and children, to develop the provision further. The childminder has built good links with members of staff at the other settings children attend. She shares information from them with the parents when they collect their children. This helps to encourage effective communication between the childminder, parents and other settings. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding matters and knows the procedures to follow to report any concerns.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder gathers information from parents when children first start with her. She regularly observes children and completes regular assessments to monitor their achievements. She identifies the next steps needed in their learning and uses these to help plan activities to extend children's learning further. For example, she planned farm- related activities to follow children's interest in farm animals. The children enjoy using the garden and a wide range of activities to develop their physical skills and engage their curiosity. For example, they became involved in counting spadefuls of soil into containers and exploring how colours changed when they were mixed.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a stimulating and welcoming environment. Good routines have been established and children learn to be responsible for managing simple tasks by themselves. For example, on returning from the garden and again before lunch, the children washed their own hands. The childminder encourages children to be independent and to freely choose from the activities and toys to develop their interests. She helps children to share things; for example, as she equally counts out the cards for a game. Children happily explore their environment, safe in the knowledge that the childminder is close by to provide reassurance and support when required.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make progress that is at least typical for their ages and stages of development. Children develop the key skills they need for the next steps in their learning. They enjoy exploring their environment. For example, they delight in the thrill of sliding down the slide. Children become involved in making music together, using a wide range of instruments. They develop good social skills as they engage with others; for example, during visits in the local community.
