This provision is good

 Children make good progress from their starting points. The childminder plans good- quality activities, adapting them well to meet children's individual learning and differing ages. For example, the childminder uses different language for children to understand questions. This helps to build their confidence and self-esteem well.  The childminder effectively evaluates her practice and carries out regular training. This helps to enhance the good-quality activities that are on offer to the children. For example, the childminder evaluates how children use activities and she adapts them.  The childminder works closely in partnership with parents. For example, she gathers their views and uses these to shape the service she provides, such as adapting menus and routines after discussions with parents. The childminder uses this information to successfully help her to promote children's welfare.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always fully support children's independence skills. For example, she does not consistently teach children how to support their own health and well-being, such as through blowing their nose.  The childminder does not always provide the best of opportunities to promote children's understanding of healthy eating. For example, she does not fully extend children's awareness of where food comes from and how to prepare it.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 build on children's independence skills and their understanding of their own well-being  extend children's understanding of healthy eating and lifestyles.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children in the main play area.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector sampled documents, including risk assessments and safeguarding.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of child protection policies and the procedures to follow to protect children from harm. The childminder keeps up to date with changes to legislation, helping her to keep children safe. The childminder completes detailed risk assessments. For example, she works with parents when she makes changes, so they are fully aware of the reasons why. This helps children to play in a safe learning environment. The childminder supervises children well. She makes good use of stairgates to help stop children accessing areas without her being present, such as the kitchen and upstairs areas. The childminder works closely in partnership with other settings children attend. For example, they share children's stages of development, helping them to work together to progress children's learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder completes good-quality assessments that help her to plan children's next steps in learning. The childminder uses her good knowledge of children's interests as well as their next steps of learning to inform her planning. She tracks children's progress, which helps her to identify any gaps in their learning. The childminder takes effective steps to close these gaps. For example, she works with parents to identify any early concerns with children's learning and development. The childminder extends children's learning well; for example, she asks effective questions to build on children's language development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder teaches children effective boundaries, helping them to behave well. Children learn the differences between what is right and wrong. They share resources well and learn to take turns. Children learn how to keep themselves safe. For example, when they are using role-play resources, the childminder teaches children why they need to wear the safety goggles. Children have good opportunities to use a wide range of resources to promote their physical development. For example, the childminder makes good use of local drop-in groups so children have access to larger play equipment.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are ready for the next stage in their learning. Children learn how to use newfound skills, such as emptying and filling containers. Children make good progress with their early mathematical development. For example, they build towers and count the number of bricks. Children self-select resources, helping them to choose what they would like to play with.
