Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 Leaders' evaluation procedures are still not sufficiently rigorous to secure continuous improvement. There is insufficient support for the professional development of staff to raise the quality of teaching to a consistently good level.  Staff do not always take every opportunity to plan for, and develop, children's growing understanding of mathematical skills.  At times, staff do not extend opportunities for children to think for themselves and respond to questions.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children's emotional well-being is supported effectively. Children are happy and settled. They develop secure relationships with staff and with other children. Children develop their independence skills, initiate their play and follow their own interests.  Staff are attentive to children during activities. Staff make clear their expectations and, for example, explain boundaries to help ensure children's good behaviour.  Children are safe and secure. Staff have a sound understanding of how to safeguard children. They implement secure working practices to support children's health, safety and well-being.  Staff build positive partnerships with parents and with staff at local schools, which supports a collaborative approach to children's care and learning. This helps to prepare children for times of change and the move to school.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure staff supervision and training foster a culture of support to raise the teaching skills of staff to a consistently good level, and provide time for them to discuss sensitive issues 20/07/2016

p.2

Due Date

 ensure staff extend children's mathematics skills effectively during their play and exploration. 20/07/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 review the quality of the provision regularly to identify areas for improvement accurately, and include the views of parents and children in evaluation methods  recognise and extend opportunities for children to think critically as they learn.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the main base room and garden.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager, and checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of staff working with children.  The inspector sampled relevant documentation, including children's learning records, planning, and a selection of the pre-school's policies.  The inspector held meetings with the manager and spoke with staff at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Leaders have made some positive changes to improve the pre-school since the previous inspection. For example, they have appointed a qualified deputy manager and are able to provide all necessary documentation regarding insurance, staff recruitment and qualifications to ensure the safe and efficient running of the service. However, leaders do not monitor and improve staff practice well, such as through effective performance management. Staff do not benefit from regular training and professional development opportunities to ensure a positive impact on children's progress. Safeguarding is effective. Staff know when and how to report concerns about a child's welfare to professional safeguarding agencies.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Overall, staff, know how well children are progressing and monitor which aspects of children's learning to focus on next. They complete observations, assessments and planning which are incorporated into daily activities. In some instances, the quality of teaching is effective. Children are actively engaged in a range of enjoyable activities that are based around their interests. For example, children enjoy seeing how their strawberries grow. Children play imaginatively and learn to use their senses, such as when smelling herbs. Staff are always interested in what children are doing and saying. They involve most children in discussions at group time but they do not always engage some younger, less confident children effectively. Staff do not always take opportunities to support the use of mathematical language well during play, and they do not have high enough expectations of what children can achieve or provide good levels of challenge.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children behave well. They show that they feel safe and grow in confidence. Staff supervise children well and they complete thorough safety checks to ensure children play safely. Staff help children to learn effectively about safe risks, such as through everyday activities and discussions. Staff provide a wide range of opportunities for children that reflect and value their diverse backgrounds. Children learn to respect differences and to treat others fairly. Children enjoy their daily outside activities. Staff teach children well about healthy lifestyles, for example, eating healthy snacks and being energetic.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children make suitable progress from their starting points and gain some skills in preparation for the move to school. Children develop their early writing skills and confidence. They gain physical skills; however, they do not gain good mathematical skills.
